Opportunities in the Green Economy

The emerging 'Green' Economy is a response to the current global economic and environmental challenges. Climate change, the challenge of rising energy& food prices and environmental degradation have led to new global agreements to reduce carbon emissions and introduce better and stricter environmental legislation. Businesses have no choice, but to respond to these challenges with innovation, investment in new technologies and to develop a more efficient way to use precious resources.

This means that there will be more jobs in areas such as renewable energy, environmental law, environmental auditing, sustainable construction, engineering and design. But there is also a need for a new kind of leadership in this field and for people who can instigate behavioural change.

In addition to these specific applied skills, businesses will also seek to employ graduates with 'eco-literacy' skills e.g. a general understanding of sustainability challenges, mechanisms to mitigate and instigate pro sustainability behaviour e.g. understanding how to calculate a carbon footprint, ways to conserve energy, efficient recycling etc. Pro sustainability behaviour will typically lead to cost savings and is therefore becoming essential rather than optional.
