Eating out
For a relatively small town, Falmouth has a fantastic array of cafes and restaurants, with something to satisfy every palate. From pub grub to international cuisine, its diversity never disappoints. To cater for the student population many of the local restaurants make eating out student-friendly by offering discounts and great deals. Plenty also pride themselves on using the best local produce to create delicious dishes. Below are some options that you should definitely consider:
For the ultimate sophisticated pub grub head to 5 Degrees West. The classic 5 Degrees burger comes highly recommended for a wholesome treat. With classy furnishings and huge portions, this place provides a great atmosphere whilst catering for even the largest appetite at affordable prices. On Monday nights during term time look out for their 5-5-5 deal which includes three main meals from their specials menu for £5 each. For all other times they offer a student discount of 15%.
Dolly's Tea Room and Wine Bar has been gaining friends on two fronts: by day it's a friendly and slightly retro tea room, serving home-made cakes warm from the oven, by night it's a bar serving good wine and fresh tapas at student-friendly prices.
Harbour Lights is a great place to taste the local seafood at student rates. It overlooks the sea and is an ideal venue for a mid-afternoon feast. The scampi is fresh and tasty, although the haddock is usually the favourite amongst most students. It’s a tradition in Falmouth to take your fish and chips, grab a pint from The Front and enjoy your meal outside on the pier – perfectly acceptable and cheap as chips (literally).
If you're in a rush and need sustenance before an early lecture, grab a pasty from Rowe’s (they’re the best, and tend to fill the town centre with a smell that makes your mouth water). It’s probably not surprising, but pasties really are a part of the culture here! Rowe’s offer loads of different fillings but you won't go far wrong with a traditional steak and onion.
Pea Souk is a veggie restaurant set to satisfy even the herbiest of herbivores. Great food is accompanied by a homely atmosphere and comfortable seating. You can pick from a variety of soups, sandwiches and salads, although the falafel is guaranteed to hit the spot. Pea Souk has a strictly fair trade policy, uses local produce and they put a lot of care and attention into their food.
Over in Penryn, right on the river, Miss Peapod’s Café serves delicious local, organic and fair trade food with a good veggie and vegan selection. Champions of sustainability, even their wooden floor had a previous life in a club in London!
For something more familiar, Falmouth's not short of well known chains, including Pizza Express, Prezzo, Xen Noodle Bar, Burger King, McDonald’s and Domino’s.
If the work is piling up and you need a relaxed evening break, try one of Falmouth’s tapas restaurants with your friends. If tapas don’t quite do it for you, then head to the Chain Locker for a quiet beer before nipping across the way to the Mali Thai Restaurant for a good night out without breaking the bank.

After four years in Cornwall and Falmouth, I am still finding new places to eat, drink and visit. I wish I had another year here. So many students choose to stay down with their mates after term ends; it gives the place a really good feeling to know everyone is having so much fun.
