Living in Cornwall

A Student Guide to Falmouth and Penryn

(For students thinking of studying at the University's Cornwall Campus)

By Nadiya Hussain, 3rd Year BA English

I’m coming to my third year of English at the Cornwall Campus and I’m already thinking about how sad it’s going to be to leave. I’m sure this is a difficult time for you too; deciding what University to go to is a huge decision. This guide to Falmouth and Penryn is one of the things that will help you figure out if coming here is right for you (and that’s what truly matters in my opinion).

Before I applied here I'd never been to Cornwall before. I’m still here now because I couldn’t actually comprehend being anywhere else.

There are so many opportunities to try different things here; Falmouth is a town of different arts, great music, fire dancers, jugglers, surfers and sports galore. We’re laid back and chilled out. Not that we don’t work, it’s just that unlike a lot of other top 10 universities we’re not in constant competition with our peers. People here help each other and there’s a strong ethos of kindness and companionship. Sharing a campus with Falmouth University brings a completely different mix into university life; we get to help out with film, photography and fashion projects which means we’re not always absorbed in academia.

When it’s cold in winter, we compensate with warm pubs, great hot chocolate and watching the sun rise on the pier. The summers here are legendary; it’s all about beach barbeques, fires and acoustic guitars. When I leave I’m always going to remember the great times I’ve had on the beaches, feeling like I was in a completely different country.

When I chose the Cornwall Campus, I had no idea how much was going on here. I had inklings about the watersports and laid-back vibe, but it's only once you get here that you really start to appreciate everything that's on offer.
