Sport
Sport is an enormous part of Exeter life. Playing or watching there are limitless opportunities to be a part of it. If you want to play have a look at university societies, inter-mural, or anything the Sports Centre on Streatham or St Luke’s campus is laying on. However, if you want to join the crowds who mass around St James’ Park or Sandy Park at weekends, and many do, then peruse the following.
Exeter City FC
There has never been a more exciting time to watch Exeter City FC play. Recently promoted to League One to play alongside the likes of Leeds, Southampton and Norwich, there will be some big teams visiting next season – not that it’ll be extortionate to watch them. After two promotions in two years, Exeter City are a serious force in sport for the South West.
Located between the city centre and Exeter Streatham Campus – a short walk from both – St James’ Park is a focal part of the city. Even if you’re just in town on a match day you’ll notice the atmosphere and the thousands of red and white stripes making the pilgrimage to the stadium. Every year there is a varsity match between Exeter City and the Exeter University 1st team, with both residents and students turning out in force to watch.
Exeter Chiefs
Sandy Park, a short bus or train journey from the centre is home to the Exeter Chiefs, a Division One rugby side. Boasting a great atmosphere in a new stadium, The Chiefs are worth a visit to see Exeter’s love of their sporting team. With a host of new signings, including several internationals, quality and professional rugby is easily found in Exeter. A classic atmosphere that sweeps along even those who aren’t rugby fans, come and see the Exeter obsession with rugby in the flesh.
Somerset CCC
If you’re a cricket fan, sadly Devon doesn’t have a major county club. There are however, numerous chances to play with societies or local cricket clubs, and it’s only a brief train journey (40mins direct) to Taunton and the home of Somerset County Cricket Club. Test, one-day and Twenty20 games are all on-show, and Somerset boast two former Ashes stars; Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer.
