Emma GreenExeter is committed to supporting students who want to graduate into their perfect job and there is no end to the invaluable support I’ve received. As well as studying for my Law degree I also run my own online business, Rosalind James. Exeter fully supports student entrepreneurship and when I asked for help, the employability team helped me through the Career Mentor Scheme. I have found the scheme incredibly beneficial and can’t recommend it highly enough. Whether I decide to pursue Law as a career or dedicate myself completely to my business, Exeter has given me the best possible opportunity to maximise my employability and it’s fantastic to know that there are people here to help you. Lucia BeltrameMany people believe that universities are just a place to acquire knowledge about their chosen degree; I did. At the University of Exeter you learn more than just a subject. I’ve had the chance to pursue so many possibilities since I started my programme.
This year, I am setting up a Leadership Society at the University and completing the Exeter Leaders Award – as well as graduating from a great university. The help and support I have received during my journey here has been invaluable.

Dan HartnettBefore embarking on my search for a university, I’d been told by older friends and family that I’d know when I found the university that was right for me. I didn’t expect this would be the case, but from the moment I set foot on the Streatham Campus I felt at home. It’s not until you visit the University and meet the staff and students that you really understand the ethos of the place. There are so many opportunities and so many things going on, and Exeter students just love getting involved. Whether it’s sports, volunteering, working or joining societies, there seems to be something here for everyone. Read more

Nick DavisIt is undeniable that the University of Exeter has become one of the finest universities in the UK and indeed the world, having become an almost permanent fixture in the UK’s top 10 higher education rankings. Roughly four years ago I was one of the lucky few who knew exactly which university I wanted to attend. I knew that my programme was one of the best in the country and that I was going to attend a lush utopian campus near the sea. Looking back now, these factors have somewhat paled in comparison to everything I have experienced over the years. No other place I have visited on my modest travels has ever inspired the kind of belief and success that the University of Exeter and specifically the Students’ Guild does. Read more

Jonathan HarrisPrevious FXU Presidents have spoken of the unique environment and idyllic setting of the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus but I feel that these aspects are a given. My belief is that when students choose Cornwall they do so, initially at least, for the beaches, the Cornish vibe and its unrivalled community atmosphere. As incredible as these things are, they’re the tip of the iceberg. The University of Exeter’s activities in Cornwall are at the forefront of both learning and research, helped in a large part by the idea of Cornwall as a living laboratory. We truly are creating a world renowned campus with an educational ethos to match.

Andy MortonWhy did I choose Exeter? Like you are doing now, I looked at the prospectus. My programme was one of the best in the country and at the forefront of research, the University’s ranking was also high and I got a feel that the University was very student orientated, and welcoming. Everyone I knew who had been had loved it. So I went along to the Open Day and my decision was made. I haven’t looked back since. Exeter really has so much to offer. Aside from being a campus university, close to the city centre, it has beautiful countryside on its doorstep. Everything you need is also on campus – an excellent library, fantastic sports facilities, cafes, study rooms, SU bar and campus cinema; you name it and it’s there. Read more

Amber ReedI looked at loads of university prospectuses, as well as their campuses, before finally deciding that Exeter was the one for me, both from an academic and sport perspective. I’m a sports scholar in my 2nd year and my time at Exeter has really fuelled my passion for rugby, which had already been an important part of my life for a number of years. The facilities and opportunities provided by the University really are high quality. It’s made it so easy for me to keep progressing at rugby and reach a higher level. I am in no doubt that the University of Exeter was the right choice for me.

Tom SargeantHaving played rugby professionally for two years before coming to university, I chose to come to Exeter because it was far and away the best place for me to combine academic studies at an excellent university with playing rugby to a high level. As part of the sports scholarship scheme, I’ve benefited from elite level support from top class strength and conditioning coaches, cookery and nutritional workshops, and mentoring throughout my time here. I’ve also had the chance to give something back through talks about sport to local school children.
I hope to return to playing rugby after graduating, and Exeter has been the perfect place to springboard me into in the future. Read more

Abhyuday PurkayasthaAfter studying science at school I decided I wanted to switch to a business course for university. The BA Management programme at Exeter is rated highly by past alumni around the world, and the added incentive of studying Leadership got my attention. Now I’m here I like the practical approach in tutorials, which makes learning theories a lot easier and fun. The campus would easily be rated as one of the best in the world, it’s a real scenic paradise. The view of the hills from my room in Holland Hall was amazing. For admission at one of the new ‘Ivy League’ universities, where there is equal emphasis on studying and student life, choose Exeter! Life here gets better every day. Read more

Erika-Maria SzaszEver since I was young, I’ve wanted to study at a prestigious university. Exeter made that dream a reality. I chose to come here because I think students are able to develop personal and professional skills that they’ll use for the rest of their careers. I wanted to study Politics because it ties in so much with current affairs, including the political situation in my own country, Romania. I know the politics department is one of the best in the UK as well. There are so many good things about Exeter. We are given help to develop skills that will be helpful throughout our careers, the campus is amazing and there are so many events, such as Chinese New Year and Diwali, where we can meet new people. I would definitely recommend Exeter to friends. Read more

Dr Ian CookGeography is the holistic ‘world discipline’. It helps us to better understand complex and thorny arguments about climate change, (un)fair trade, natural hazards, multiculturalism, sustainability and more. There are no easy answers. That’s why so many people go to university to study the subject. Our task as lecturers is to explain and enthuse in class, to show what’s worth reading in the academic literature, and encourage students to develop rich, complex, critical understandings in presentations, coursework and exams. We want our students to question and develop their own ideas, to become more active, questioning, critical, careful learners.

Rebecca ChowAlthough I love studying in the nice, green campus environment at Exeter, it is the academic environment which really makes it special here. There’s more than enough support for international students at Exeter. The International Society here helps you to meet other international students so you won’t feel alone in the UK. I have friends from all sorts of different countries, and you can make friends easily because of all the events the University provides to help you to meet more people. As an international student it’s also great to be able to travel to other European countries, and I’ve visited Spain and Germany while I’ve been here. Read more

Anh Viet HuynhTo be honest I had no idea about Exeter until the day I started to fill in my UCAS application. After going through the website and actually visiting, I fell completely in love with the University and the town. We have a modern Business School, the historic Reed Hall and a great city centre. If you take the initiative and get involved in activities you’ll be surprised how friendly this university is. I’m a member of the Basketball Society and the Vietnamese Society, co-founder and president of Bright Futures Exeter, and the senior member in the International Welcome Team. Exeter is an amazing place. Just come and experience this fabulous campus for yourself and you will understand! Read more

Elizabeth MackleyStudying abroad in Australia during my third year was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I chose to go to the University of Queensland in Brisbane, renowned for its blue skies and beautiful beaches. Academically, continuing my studies in English and Philosophy at UQ offered new perspectives on my subjects, deepening my understanding and breadth of knowledge. But perhaps the most valuable part of studying abroad was the life-experience opportunities available. From making friends from all over the world and immersing myself in a different culture with a new vocabulary of slang, to indulging my travel-bug, the study abroad scheme literally opened up the world to me. Dr Alex ThompsonAs a marketer with a background in anthropology, I am interested in the dynamics that occur between consumer actions, the marketplace, and cultural meanings. My interest in this area has led me to pursue research within the healthcare sector where I explore the impacts of disease upon communities. An important component of my research is incorporating these experiences in the classroom.
I have high expectations of both my students and myself. My aim is to ensure that my students have everything they need to succeed not only academically, but also throughout their careers. Read more

Max BenwellIn my second year I went to Toronto. I did things I’ll always remember: stand on top of the 550 metre tall CN Tower with only a sheet of glass beneath my feet; watch the city’s ice hockey team win a historic victory over their arch rivals; see some of my favourite bands play the legendary Lee’s Palace; and go to a Q&A with Tim Burton for my college’s newspaper. I got involved with as much as I could, writing for two of the dozen or more student newspapers there. Being involved in this rich media culture made me question why Exeter couldn’t have the same, so when I got back I set up Exetera Magazine. Without a doubt, if I hadn’t gone to Toronto, Exetera would not exist. Read more

Anna HaymanEven before university I knew I wanted to spend a year studying or working abroad. Initially I thought about Europe, but I decided to challenge myself and go somewhere outside my comfort zone. I was spoilt for choice with the range of study abroad options available, but with Hong Kong branded as ‘Asia’s World City’ and the University of Hong Kong ranked amongst the top 25 universities in the world, it was the obvious choice. Exeter offers so many incredible opportunities to its students and I’d definitely recommend taking a year abroad, regardless of whether you want to work overseas in the future. It’s only a year (or shorter!) in your whole life and it could end up being one of the best. Read more

Antonia WimbushAs a student of French and Spanish, I knew that spending a year abroad would be a compulsory part of my degree. Before I arrived at the University of Exeter, I was rather nervous and apprehensive about what this would entail. However, I needn’t have worried, as the support network at the University, both before and during the year, meant that no matter how small the problem, I always had someone to talk to. I would definitely recommend studying abroad to anyone, regardless of their discipline, as it’s a brilliant experience to get to know a different culture, language or way of life, as well as enabling you to increase your self-confidence and meet new people. The hardest part of my year abroad was having to leave! Read more

Amy PriceIt sounds cheesy, but I felt Exeter was the right university for me from my first visit to the campus, and four years later, I know I made the right decision. I’m in my final year studying BA English and Spanish and have just come back from my Year Abroad in Majorca, where I studied at the University of the Balearic Islands. Studying two subjects means I benefit from a broader range of skills, but the Year Abroad was definitely the experience that I’ve got the most out of during my time at university.
Without studying a language at Exeter I would probably never have had the opportunity to live and study abroad. I would 100% recommend studying a language at Exeter, just to experience the year abroad! Read more

Daniel VentonIt’s so difficult to single out a particular element which I enjoy most about the Cornwall Campus. It’s very social; you don’t feel like another student, but a member of a family within a close-knit community. I have really enjoyed meeting a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds, and the small class sizes on my programme allow you to make some very close friends. I’m still having an amazing experience here; my programme is stimulating and extremely enjoyable and the social life is simply fantastic! I believe my experience is unique, because of the range of students who study both at the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth on the same campus.

Graham BarclayI am currently the Chief Editor of Flex, the student newspaper, which is great to put on my CV. When I graduate I intend to move to South Africa where I want to work as an investigative journalist exposing political corruption, social crises and economic calamities in the hope of giving something back to my homeland. Studying at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus has been the single greatest experience of my life so far. I have made friends here who I will be socialising with well into my old age, I am doing a degree I am passionate about, I live in the best part of the UK and, on top of that, I am lucky enough to find inspiration for my poetry every single day.

Becky ElliotI always knew that French and Maths were two subjects I could excel at and Exeter was one of the only universities which offered an equally balanced programme between the two through the Flexible Combined Honours scheme. The programme sounded great and the module choices are so flexible that I could tailor my studies around my interests. Throughout my degree both departments have been extremely supportive and it is obvious that the lecturers are very passionate about their subjects. It was evident that student support is taken very seriously here and, as it was my first time away from home, I found this very reassuring. My personal tutor has encouraged my learning and wellbeing since I started. Read more

Laurie PotterEver since I opened the Exeter University undergraduate prospectus back in 2009 I felt sure it was the place for me. Its outstanding academic reputation, coupled with its ability to consistently be one of England’s top sporting institutions, makes it the ideal place to study for any aspiring young athletes with an aim to leave in three years’ time with a top-class degree. As a University Sports Scholar you receive a great deal of support not only through funding, but also access to top coaches, and your own individual sports mentor. The High Performance Unit on campus is also incredibly supportive and provides the platform to take that extra step, while you also have the chance to meet many other students in the same position as yourself. I absolutely loved it and had no idea it would take me on such an exhilarating, enjoyable and exciting journey. The best thing about being involved with the Student’s Guild is feeling part of something, and being able to bring this sense of communality to other students.

Dr Ceri LewisI’m researching the environmental biology of marine invertebrates and their responses to environmental parameters such as climate change and pollution.
I incorporate research into my undergraduate teaching, using examples from my own work to illustrate the fundamental principles I’m explaining. Using current research questions to illustrate fundamental ecological and physiological principles really helps students to realise the importance and real world applications of what they’re being taught, and also makes for a far more enjoyable learning experience.
