Rocks and samples of man-made materials from around the world are cut and polished here to be analysed by optical microscopes or advanced electron beam techniques using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), QemScan or electron microprobe (EPMA). Investigations could vary from identifying micron-scale distribution of precious metals such as gold or platinum in mineralised samples to characterizing arsenic-contaminated samples from industrial sites.
