Judge Demetrios Hadjihambis (LLD)

Demetrios Hadjihambis was born in Famagusta, Cyprus. He studied law at the University of Exeter and graduated in 1968 with First Class Honours and was awarded the Bracton prize for the best graduate, the Lloyd Parry prize in Constitutional Law and the Sir Archibald Bodkin prize in Criminal Law. Whilst at Exeter, Demetrios was editor of the Bracton Law Journal and Honorary President of the University Debating Society and led the University team at the National Mooting Competition. He proceeded to the University of Cambridge, Jesus College where he was awarded the PhD for his thesis on Liability for Torts in Anglo-American Choice of Law.

Called to the Cyprus Bar, he practiced law in Cyprus. He was also Lecturer in Law at the University of Exeter from 1974 until 1979. In 1982 he was appointed a District Court Judge and in 1992 was promoted to Senior District Judge and to President of the District Court in 1995. In 1999 he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Cyprus.

Demetrios is also an ad hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights and Chairman of the ‘Evagoras’ Athletic Association of Famagusta. He has had many translations from English into Greek published as well as his own works, 100 Love Couplets Written in the Cypriot Dialect (2011) and The Supreme Court of Cyprus and its Judges since its Establishment in 1883 (2010).
