Our new Vice-Chancellor: recruitment process
Professor Sir Steve Smith will be retiring from the University in August 2020, and we undertook a thorough international recruitment process to find our new Vice-Chancellor.
We followed a defined process to find the right leader for our University, one who can build on our current successes and enable us to thrive in the future. The process was led by a Joint Committee of Council and Senate, chaired by Sarah Turvill, our Chair of Council.
We used a professional recruitment firm and worked with an external advisor on diversity amongst senior appointments. We also used the networks and contacts of Exeter’s senior team, academic and professional service staff, Council, alumni, and regional, national and international partners.
We involved colleagues and students in influencing the job description and person specification. Our dedicated microsite contains the full candidate recruitment pack. Initial interviews with the search firm took place over Summer 2019. We then organised visits for the shortlisted candidates to our Exeter and Penryn campuses in October to enable them to find out more about our University. We liaised with the candidates to understand what would be useful for them during these visits and who they wanted to meet with (staff and students). The formal interviews took place in November, and included further interactions with colleagues from across the University and student representatives on the interview days. We will keep colleagues and students, stakeholders and the wider community as well as this page and our newsletters updated with further information when relevant and appropriate.
