Our new Vice-Chancellor: next phase in recruitment
Professor Sir Steve Smith will be retiring from the University in August 2020, and the recruitment process to find our new Vice-Chancellor has begun.
We’re following a defined process to find the right leader for our University, one who can build on our current successes and enable us to thrive in the future. The process is led by a Joint Committee of Council and Senate, chaired by Sarah Turvill, our Chair of Council.
We are using a professional recruitment firm and working with an external advisor on diversity amongst senior appointments. We also wish to use the networks and contacts of Exeter’s senior team, academic and professional service staff, Council, alumni, and regional, national and international partners.
We involved colleagues and students in influencing the job description and person specification. Our dedicated microsite contains the full candidate recruitment pack. Initial interviews with the search firm have taken place over Summer 2019. We will now be organising visits for the shortlisted candidates to our Exeter and Penryn campuses in October to enable them to find out more about our University. We are liaising with the candidates to understand what will be useful for them during these visits and who they would like to meet with (staff and students). The formal interviews will take place in November, and, while being mindful of the need for confidentiality, we are also planning some further interactions with colleagues from across the University on the interview days. We will keep this page and our newsletters updated with further information when relevant and appropriate.
