Rent a Co Car

In partnership with Co Cars, we now have 3 hire by the hour, low emission Toyota Yaris Hybrids available on campus for colleagues to book for both business and personal use. All are parked in their own dedicated bays with two located in Car Park C on Streatham campus and the third on College Road by St Luke’s.

Bookings can be made 24/7 via the Co Cars online booking system using either a desktop computer or smartphone. Details of all Co Cars hire costs can be found here - the Toyota Yaris hybrids fall into pricing Band 2. Costs are inclusive of fuel, insurance, roadside assistance, road tax and maintenance.

Once you are a member of Co Cars, you also have access to all the other cars in their network. There are currently 40 cars available across Exeter, including electric Volkswagen ID3s, Renault Zoes and a Fiat 500e. Cars are also available to hire at locations across the South West including Plymouth, Cornwall and Salisbury. Covid-19 cleaning policy

For your safety and wellbeing, Co Cars are cleaned thoroughly on a frequent basis. Every car also contains 70+% alcohol hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes for you to use at the start and end of your trip. Co Cars' full Covid-19 cleaning policy is available to read on their website.

Business use

It is free for all colleagues to register for an Employee membership and, once your application has been approved, you will be issued with your own smartcard and PIN. Then simply book, add your cost code (you will need this to complete the booking), find your car in its dedicated parking space and drive away.

Personal use

As a University employee, and regardless of whether you have registered for Employee membership, you are eligible for free first year Individual or Household membership, allowing you to book, pay and use Co Cars for your own personal use. You will be issued with a separate smartcard and PIN for these bookings.

How does it work?

  1. Joining is easy, simply complete the relevant online application form(s). Choose from Employee, Individual or Household memberships
  2. Once your application(s) has/have been processed and approved, Co Cars will send you your personal smart card(s) and issue you with your unique PIN number(s). These will enable you to make your bookings and access your car
  3. To make a booking, log into the Co Cars online booking system then select the date of travel and your preferred car and add your booking start and end times, for Employee bookings you will need to enter a cost code. If you have more than one membership, always double check you’ve selected the correct account!
  4. Go to your reserved car in the dedicated parking space and unlock it with your smartcard. We suggest you take a quick look around the car to check there is no damage to the vehicle before you start your hire. If you do notice any damage, take a photo and report it to Co-Cars.
  5. Co Cars will then send you full instructions with your booking confirmation, including handy ‘how to’ videos for each stage of the process. You’ll also find a user guide in your car and they are always just a phone call away if you want to speak to someone in person.   6. Don’t worry if this all seems a bit complicated or unfamiliar. Your booking confirmation contains useful links to further instructions and ‘how to’ videos plus you’ll find a user guide in every car.
