Module BIO3082

Science Communication

In this module, students “produce a video aimed at the general public for the One Show-style audience; they write a briefing document for parliament and they write a New Scientist-style feature article, so we take different audiences and they have to communicate their science in a clear and appropriate manner for the people they’re talking to, which obviously has really big implications for their employability”.

Preparing for practical work

Working with two students, Nicola developed an e-learning resource to enable students to prepare for their practical work. They “produced a series of videos which showed the students how to do the techniques and how to carry out the practical sessions”.

Aim 3: Research-inspired, inquiry-led learning
To increase levels of student engagement with their academic studies

What students say:

  • "Good opportunity to develop skills not covered by any other module on our course".
  • "Really good module that is different from any other in the course; providing skills in communicating science which are important for our careers as graduates. Great use of inviting specialists in to give lectures".

Science communication

"The main focus of the module is for the students to understand who their audience is, what their audience knows, what they need to know, what they want to know and how to get their message across clearly."

Developing e-learning resources for practicals

"As the students have a look at the video before the session they come into the lab better prepared and more confident."
