Developments on campus
As a University we constantly invest in our properties to provide new facilities and upgrade existing ones. Work is carefully programmed to avoid disruption to students, particularly during exams and the period leading up to them. However, from time to time, there will be some unavoidable disturbance or inconvenience.
What works are planned during 2019/2020?
During the 2019/20 year we have two phases of works scheduled in our student accommodation areas as follows:
- Essential repairs and improvement works - Some of our residences at Birks Grange Village, Duryard and Lafrowda are undergoing essential repairs and improvement works during the 2019/20 academic year. These works involve scaffolding being added to the exterior of the building to allow the external cladding to be reinstalled. Works will also be taking place in some Lafrowda blocks to refresh the shower room flooring, so you will need to move from your accommodation to an alternative flat in the same residential area for a period of one week. - Construction of new student residences – Works will also be underway to create new student accommodation at our Spreytonway and East Park sites, both of which are in close proximity to some of our Lafrowda and St German’s residences. Please note other works may be taking place in around the residences on an ad-hoc basis throughout the year, however the above are the scheduled works we are aware of at this stage.

When you receive your accommodation offer please check the maps again to understand the position of your allocated block in relation to any planned works.
How will I know when and what type of works are happening?
Typically construction works take place from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-1pm on Saturdays. All works are carefully managed and if you’re living in an affected block, or in close proximity to Spreytonway, you will receive regular updates outlining the work activities for the week including the anticipated levels of disruption to help you plan your week. This information will also be displayed online and in accommodation receptions.
Will I receive a rent reduction?
Every effort will be made to reduce the disruption caused by any of these works, however rent reductions will only be available for students living in residences in 2019/20:
- who have works taking place to the exterior of the block they live in (as part of the essential repairs and improvement works)
- who need to move out of their flats to allow shower room works to be completed
Please note blocks in close proximity to the essential repairs and improvement works, or the development of our new student residences, will not be eligible for a rent reduction.
