Guarantee

We believe it’s important that you’re able to settle into student life with us as easily and smoothly as possible. That's why we guarantee to make you an offer of accommodation within University owned, managed or approved residences, as long as you meet the criteria and deadline listed in the New Students section below.

Coming to us through clearing or is Exeter your insurance choice? Find out more about applying after the guarantee deadline here.

Not sure living in our residences is right for you? You don’t have to live in university owned or managed accommodation during your first year. If you prefer, you can search for private accommodation within the city.

New Undergraduate students for September 2023 entry

We guarantee to make you an offer of accommodation if you apply by our guarantee deadline of 31 July 2023 and are:

  • An unaccompanied* home or international undergraduate who has firmly accepted an offer of a place at the University of Exeter entering your first year of study (i.e. Year 1) as a full-time student.

  • An unaccompanied* incoming study abroad or exchange student studying at the University of Exeter for the full academic year starting in September.

*Unaccompanied relates to the student only and not those who wish to live with a partner and/or children.

New Postgraduate students for September 2023 entry

We guarantee to make you an offer of accommodation if you apply by our guarantee deadline of 31 July 2023 and are:

  • An unaccompanied* international postgraduate in your first year of study for the full academic year starting in September as a full-time student. Note: You are defined as an international student if you pay international fees.

  • An unaccompanied* incoming study abroad or exchange student studying at the University of Exeter for the full academic year starting in September.

*Unaccompanied relates to the student only and not those who wish to live with a partner and/or children.

It is important to note that we do not guarantee that your accommodation offer will be for any of the preferences you list in your application. This means that you may receive an offer for a room that was not one of your preferences.

As we have a number of residences spread across campus and within the city centre, some are more popular than others, and may be oversubscribed. In this situation, we will use the information you have provided in your accommodation application as a guide when we look to allocate you to a room.

If you'd like to see how popular each undergraduate residence is, view our 2022-23 Undergraduate Application Ratio Table which shows how many applications were received compared to how many bedspaces were available. This data is based on the applications received by the end of the 2022 guarantee period.

Depending on the volume of applications we receive, it may be necessary for us to source additional accommodation in the city which may not have been advertised.

If the University of Exeter is your insurance or clearing choice or you have received a place through adjustment, you will only be able to apply for accommodation once your university offer is confirmed. This is likely to be after the guarantee deadline date.

Applications from those who apply after the guarantee deadline are processed in order of receipt (first come, first served). An offer of university owned/managed/approved accommodation will only be made if rooms are still available.

If we are unable to allocate you to University accommodation, we will point you in the direction of alternative options so you can make your own arrangements for private accommodation in the city.

If you have deferred entry and will be commencing your degree programme in 2023/24, you will fall under our accommodation guarantee and can apply to live in University owned, managed or approved accommodation when applications open on 3 April 2023. Depending on when you apply, a formal offer of accommodation will be sent to you via email from June 2023 so making an application before mid-May is advisable.

Although we advise deferred students to apply early, your preference of accommodation will not be guaranteed. Our aim is to allocate deferred students in rooms across our residences and there is no particular residence specifically reserved for students who have deferred their entry.

If you are entering your second year of an undergraduate/postgraduate course you will not be covered by our Accommodation Guarantee. However, for 2023/24 we are able to offer a limited number of rooms to returning students. You can find out more information about the residences which are being offered on our Returning Students webpage.

Alternatively you will need to seek private accommodation within the city. Further information and advice is available on our private accommodation webpage.

If you hold both a firm and insurance offer at the University of Exeter you will need to apply for accommodation by the guarantee deadlineHowever, if your place at Exeter is subsequently confirmed for your insurance choice course, you will not be covered by our Accommodation Guarantee and your original accommodation application will be declined on results day.

You do not need to apply again, but you must contact the Accommodation Office as soon as you have accepted your insurance place, and ask for your application to be reinstated.

Please note that once your application has been reinstated you will be considered as an insurance applicant (please see point 1 above).

Following results, if your firm course offer is declined then you will no longer be covered by our Accommodation Guarantee and your original accommodation application will be withdrawn on results day.

If you then confirm an offer through clearing and decide to come to the University of Exeter, you do not need to apply again, but you must contact the Accommodation Office as soon as you have accepted your clearing place, and ask for your application to be reinstated.

Please note that once your application has been reinstated you will be considered as a late applicant (please see point 1 above).

Following results day, if you do not meet the entry requirements needed for your course then your accommodation application will be declined. If you are going through a re-mark of your results in order to amend your grade through your school/college, please contact our Admissions Team to make them aware. You must also notify the Accommodation Office.

If you applied within the accommodation guarantee period and your revised grades are received by the deadline set by Admissions, then we will still guarantee you accommodation.
