Tom Morley

Alumni in the spotlight: Tom Morley

Tom Morley, graduated with a degree in Biological Sciences in 2016 and is now working as an Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant for Trium Environmental Consulting who specialise in urban regeneration and property development projects in the UK. He works with planners, architects, technical specialists and lawyers to assess the impacts of proposed developments on the environment.

We spoke to him about his time at Exeter:

I really enjoyed the breadth of learning on my course and the calibre of students that Exeter attracts. I made life-long friends and enjoyed a multitude of social events and activities as part of a range of university societies. I chose the University of Exeter for its fantastic reputation, the location of Exeter and the layout of the campus.

I graduated two years ago and have spent time gaining a variety of work experience including conservation training, an internship in medical communications, dive instructing in the Philippines and biodiversity surveys in Indonesia. I returned from my travels earlier this year and now work in London as an Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant for an exciting start-up company. I work with planners, architects, technical specialists and lawyers to assess the impacts of proposed developments on the environment to submit alongside planning applications for large-scale urban regeneration projects in London and the UK.

I chose this career because I wanted to work in a sector relevant to my degree and have always had a passion for sustainability and environmental management. I am exposed to technical specialists and my network is continually growing which bodes well for my future career development.

The most useful skill I have gained from university is life experience! I have grown as a person from travelling to countries and being outside of my comfort zone. I sought work experience and conservation training in areas I wanted to visit so I could justify my time away from work or education, and don't regret a moment.

I would advise anyone wishing to pursue a career similar to mine to be passionate and follow their interests. Don't conform to the societal norm of jumping into the first job you are offered! I waited for the perfect role and whilst waiting continued to travel and gain work experience.

I am now living in London but am hoping to take my career experience and apply it to global organisations. I would love to travel with work and in this industry that's a real possibility.

The biggest tip I would give anyone considering a career in this industry is to network! Take every opportunity to meet people in your desired field and ask as many questions as possible.
