The alumni panel event: ‘What’s next after a Biosciences degree?’

Biosciences alumni support Exeter student employability event

Sixty Biosciences students recently attended an alumni panel event ‘What’s next after a Biosciences degree?’ to hear from former Exeter students about their careers since graduating. Five Exeter alumni took part in the event on 23 October.

Alumna Aliya Rangelova, Senior Laboratory Technician at Biovault Technical, opened the evening, speaking of the challenges and rewards of completing a degree and starting a career as a mother of a young child. Ashley Barker, Information Security Delivery Manager for Sainsbury's, followed with a comprehensive guide to working behind the scenes processing the country's millions of supermarket purchases every day. Carl Atkinson, Laboratory Manager at Axiom Veterinary, gave the audience an interesting insight into developing treatments for a wide-range of exotic animals. Claire Colenutt, Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Pirbright Institute, stressed the importance of finding work that suits your lifestyle and Susan Kay, Ecosystems Modeller at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, explained how a change of career is nothing to be afraid of.

The event allowed students to hear from people who have been in their position before and gone on to successful careers in a wide variety of fields. There was plenty of interest in our speakers after the events, with students approaching them to ask more questions and to network.

If you are interested in returning to campus to support similar events it would be great to hear from you. We are currently looking for speakers for the following events:

  • ‘Postgraduate routes after a Biosciences degree’ Tuesday 5 February 2019 from 12.30pm-1.30pm
  • Careers in sustainable development and environmental protection - date tbc
  • Careers in the charity sector – date tbc
  • Careers in healthcare – date tbc

If you are able to help with any of the above events please get in touch with Alumni Engagement Officer, Rose Gater at r.gater@exeter.ac.uk.
