A new law society

A new student-led academic law society is to be formed at the University of Exeter. It will offer a wide range of opportunities for students to help to broaden their career development, to promote interdisciplinarity and to equip themselves with the skills employers find most valuable. Traditionally these have included employer visits, mooting, pro bono and skills sessions but new challenges will provide opportunities to work on new innovative, technological and entrepreneurial projects.

This new society is being set-up following an incident last year involving students from the Bracton Law Society. A formal review into the society and its operations concluded there were several areas where conduct within the society was starkly at odds with the values of both the University of Exeter and the Students’ Guild in terms of inclusivity, diversity and tolerance.

Consequently, the Review Board’s recommendation is that the Bracton Law Society be closed and a new student-led academic law society should be formed as soon as practically possible. The Review Board has also recommended that the new society should operate under a different name and initial focus will be on developing a constitution, placing inclusivity and inclusive values at its centre.

The Students' Guild and the University are confident that the new society will ensure that current and future students have a society that is truly inclusive, and can all be proud of.

We welcome your views and hope that we can work together to build a legal community that represents us all. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in the development of the new society, please contact us on alumni@exeter.ac.uk or +44 (0) 1392 723141
