Former University of Exeter Sports Scholar Freya Davies

Flying high-Former Cricket Sports Scholar Freya Davies awarded a full time England Cricket Contract

University of Exeter alumnae Freya Davies (LLB Law 2014-2017) has been announced in the new central contracts for England Cricket in 2019.

Reflecting on the announcement of her first central contract Freya commented “I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s always been my aim to represent England and this is an exciting step in the right direction. I’m looking forward to continuing the hard work, and the challenge now of getting myself picked.”

Freya has also been a valuable member of Western Storm in the Kia Super League since its debut season and last year was named the Bowler of the Year at the end of season awards dinner. Western Storm is based in the South West and was created in 2016 when University of Exeter, Somerset County Cricket Club and Gloucestershire Country Cricket Club formed a consortium. A number of University of Exeter graduates alongside Freya have represented the side including Amara Carr (BSc Exercise and Sport Sciences, 2012-2015), Lissy Macleod (BA Philosophy, 2012-2015) and (Rebecca Silk BA English and Spanish 2014-2018), with Freya, Lissy and Amara part of the 2017 squad who won the Kia Super League.

In light of Freya’s most recent achievement Western Storm Head Coach, Trevor Griffin commented “I’m absolutely delighted for Freya. She’s worked incredibly hard at her game and this is thoroughly deserved. She’s put in so much effort and hard work, not just over the last 12 months, but ever since she started playing the game. She’s been superb for us in the KSL and last year she was our leading strike bowler. I have no doubts that she will be making her full England debut in the not too distant future”.

With regards to her senior England debut Freya has also been named in her first touring squad for England T20 vs India who will play three T20 fixtures in the run up to the tour to Sri Lanka.

Whilst at University of Exeter Freya was a Sports Scholar and part of the Women’s Cricket Performance Programme. The Performance Programme provides athletes access to specialist coaching, exceptional facilities including the Athlete Development Centre and Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre and a comprehensive support services package. The University of Exeter Women’s Cricket 1st team have been hugely successful in both British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) indoor and outdoor competitions having most recently won BUCS indoor silver.
