Governors for Schools

Exeter alumni embrace School Governors programme

University of Exeter alumni have signed up in their droves to support schools via the Governors for Schools Programme.

Since launching in 2015, 210 Exeter alumni have applied to be Governors.

Governors are the single biggest group of volunteers in the country, with nearly 300,000 individuals taking on governor roles. However, there is still a national shortage, with upwards of 40,000 vacant governor posts. Government education policy is placing more emphasis on the role universities can play in supporting schools in their local communities. As a result, an increasing number of universities are working with Inspiring Governance to encourage their alumni, students and staff to volunteer as school governors and trustees.

Schools require volunteers who have a passion for education or for their local community and look for a wide range of skills and professional backgrounds. Most requested skills include Education, Finance, Law, HR, Facilities and premises management, IT and general commercial or strategic experience. The largest concentration of vacancies are in the major towns and cities but coastal schools and rural schools struggle to recruit the right governors with the right skills.

If you are able to support, you will bring benefits to your local schools, communities and the children and young people within them – for more information please click here.
