Scientists in Cornwall turn to seaweeds in search for new drugs

In a project that could change the way we develop new drugs, researchers from the Medical School have been collecting and analysing seaweeds gathered from rock pools and beaches across Cornwall. They’re trying to uncover properties that could form the basis for a new generation of antibiotics and stop the growing threat of resistant superbugs, such as MRSA.

Volunteering & Giving

Volunteer in the Spotlight - Tim Gay

Volunteer in the Spotlight is a regular feature that highlights the alumni helping current students achieve more. Tim Gay (French 1974) works in marketing and PR in Devon. Read about his career and why he volunteers at the University.

Volunteering fun in the sun

“I had really loved working as a volunteer gardener for a year at a local historic mansion and garden when living in Wales. So when I moved back to the beautiful city of Exeter with my teenage son in November 2014 I thought I’d check out whether there were any volunteer gardening opportunities at the University (my alma mater). I soon found my way to the University of Exeter Community Garden.

Read more about strawberries, bug hotels and cameraderie in Jayne Cooksley’s (French & German 1980) reflections on volunteering for the Community Garden on Streatham Campus.

Exeter alumna Bending it Like Beckham!

Exeter graduate Tanvie Hans (International Management 2012) has been making news in her home country of India since signing with Tottenham Ladies in June 2013, becoming the first female from India to play for a Premier League club in England. She is now the poster girl for the new stage musical version of Bend it Like Beckham. Exeter was her first exposure to English women's football and aided her decision to return to England and play at a higher level. She went on to play for Tottenham Ladies for two seasons and has now made a move to Fulham Ladies FC. Read more (external website).

New boat takes Gold!

Thank you to all those that took part in the boat naming survey, which resulted in the name Lucem, from the University's Latin motto of Lucem sequiemur, meaning ‘Follow the Light’. Lucem is off to a tremendous start: our rowing scholars Hannah and Jess raced Lucem to Gold at the recent European Universities Rowing Championships in Hannover, Germany.

Exeter alumnus' cricket career success

Former Cricket Scholar Tom Abell signed a full time contract with Somerset upon graduation (FCH 2015). Tom scored his maiden first class hundred against Hampshire and twice carried his bat in an innings – an extraordinary achievement in that very few players do this once in a career, never mind twice in one season. Tom has been shortlisted for the Breakthrough Player award. Tom has been a tremendous asset for Exeter cricket, both on and off the field. Tom’s scholarship was supported by an alumna.
