As the Olympic and Paralympic Games get underway look out for Exeter alumni competing including Sarah Thomas (Team GB, Hockey), Ian Haley (South Africa, Hockey) and Robin Williams (Team GB, Blind Football). Others have helped create the Olympic Park, been torchbearers or are volunteers.

Honours for graduates in Queen's Birthday List
A number of Exeter alumni and Honorary Graduates have been recognised in this year's Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Air Ambulance celebrates 20 years
The Devon Air Ambulance Trust – which was founded by an Exeter alumna – is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

English PhD student wins major UK literary prize
Alumna and PhD student Ginny Baily has won a major UK literary prize for her debut novel Africa Junction. Ginny was awarded ‘The McKitterick Prize’ which is presented annually to a writer over the age of 40 for a first novel.

Deborah Meaden backs Forum at University event
Dragons’ Den investor and entrepreneur Deborah Meaden shared some of her expertise during a special event about Sustainability and Business at the University. Afterwards she spoke about the Forum.

University of Exeter welcomes Honorary Graduates
This summer the University recognised key figures, including some of its alumni, with honorary degrees. Graduation ceremonies started on Monday 16 July where an honorary degree was given to writer and broadcaster Armando Iannucci, best known for his BAFTA-winning BBC series The Thick of It.

Win for Exeter as employability programmes are named best in country
Exeter is the first ever higher education winner of Europe's graduate recruiter awards (the AGR Awards) Blue Ribbon prize.  The award recognises the year's 'best of the best' and means Exeter joins previous winners such as Accenture, IBM and The Bank of England.

Green Flag flies again over University grounds
For the second year running, the University of Exeter’s grounds have received the Green Flag Award. The flag flies outside the Washington Singer building in recognition of our well-managed, high-quality green spaces.

Universities champion biodiversity in Cornwall
Students from the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth have joined forces with the Tremough Campus Services Group to collaborate on the formation of a new Biodiversity Enhancement Plan for the Cornwall Campus.

 

Research news

Attitude towards age increases risk of dementia diagnosis
Our attitude towards our age has a massive impact on the likelihood of being diagnosed with dementia. New research shows that when seniors see themselves as ‘older’ their performance on a standard dementia screening test declines dramatically; making them five times more likely to meet the criteria for dementia.

Exeter physicist awarded Faraday Medal
A physicist whose University of Exeter career spans 40 years has been awarded the Faraday Medal of the Institute of Physics. Professor Roy Sambles was presented with the prestigious award in recognition of his pioneering research in experimental condensed matter physics.

Sport

Work starts on new home for Boat Club
Work has begun on the construction of the University’s new Boathouse at Countess Wear. The former Boathouse was demolished and the site will soon be home to a brand new, purpose-built rowing boathouse from where the University’s Boat Club will train. The construction of the new Boathouse has been made possible by the support of alumnus Nicholas Bull (Chemistry, 1973).

Exeter alumnae win gold at 470 European Championships
Sports Scholars alumnae Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth overcame challenging weather conditions and tough competition to bring home gold at the 470 Championships. The Championships are a key event on the international sailing calendar, with teams heading to Weymouth after the competition to compete at the Olympic Games.

Support your AU club
The University of Exeter Badminton, Rowing and Hockey clubs are going head-to-head to try and raise the most amount of funds and support for their club. The club with the most amount of money will receive additional funding from the University. Show your support to make sure your club comes out on top!
