Welcome to your Term 2 Sports update. It has been another successful season for sport at the University of Exeter. At the time of writing, we are currently in sixth position in the 2015-16 BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport, formerly BUSA & UAU) table. It has been an outstanding term for sport, with championship gold’s in Women’s Indoor Cricket and Men’s Rugby Union with our Men and Women's XI hockey teams reaching their respective finals as well. There are still plenty of fixtures to be played in Term 3 and we are hopeful of a top 5 finish this year. There are many ways that you can continue to show your support for Exeter Sport. We are also interested in hearing from companies that wish to explore sponsorship opportunities. As ever, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries about sport at the University of Exeter or if you would like to arrange a visit.

Your Sports Update

Dear ,

Like me, I’m sure that many of you will have been enthralled by first week of competition at the Rio Olympics Games. As well as marvelling at the world class sportspeople from every corner of the globe, do keep an eye out for the six Exeter alumni competing for Team GB. At the time of writing, Nick Thompson (pictured) and Nicola Groves both sit in 2nd position in their respective sailing events. Back in Devon, as we look towards the start of next academic year, this is a good time to reflect on the successes of last season. My highlights included watching our Men’s Rugby 1st team re-claiming the BUCS Championship title at Twickenham, our Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams competing in their BUCS finals in Sheffield, and our football team striking a last minute equaliser in their Varsity. Our pride in Exeter Sport was highlighted at the AU Dinner in May where we recognised our outstanding athletes but also saw amazing camaraderie and support for each other. I hope you enjoy reading about the latest sporting successes.

With best wishes,

Alison Davidson,

Director of Sport

University of Exeter Finish 5th in BUCS

The University of Exeter have finished in 5th place in the BUCS table, which equals our highest ever finish.  However, we have amassed the largest number of BUCS points of 3546. We end the year as the top ranked institution in Men's Hockey, Men's Rugby and Women's Tennis but our strength in depth is what continues to impress, with all 50 clubs improving both their offer and their performance year on year. Standouts this year are the performances of waterpolo, table tennis, squash and snooker / pool. Read more

Poppy Leitch Wins BUCS Sportswoman of the Year

At the BUCS (British University and College Sport) Awards Evening on Thursday 14th July I am delighted to announce that our very own Poppy Leitch, Women's Rugby, was awarded the title of BUCS Sportswoman of the Year. Poppy has had the most amazing sporting year, starting off the season in the England U20's setup but quickly graduating into the national squad and making appearances in the Women's 6 Nations Tournament during the winter/spring. Poppy has also just come back from a tour of the US with the national team. Our own Fresher of the Year, Poppy is one of our numerous sporting success stories from this fantastic season and we all wish her the best, and more success, in her sporting career.

More Cricket Success

The Women's 1st XI had the privilege of playing at Lords for the third year in a row against Loughborough and posted a very respectable 165 off their 40 overs, with scholar Aylish Cranstone continuing her fine form with the bat. Although the Ladies managed to pick off three Loughborough wickets this proved not enough with the old enemy winning by 7 wickets. Although a defeat, the Ladies can look back on another fantastic season both Indoor and Outdoor achieving Gold and Silver respectively. The Men's 1st XI travelled up to Leicester looking to add to their successful Indoor season as well as their promotion to the Premier South - not to mention having an unbeaten season. Again the enemy would be Loughborough and again Exeter batted first. The game was reduced to 45 overs due to a delay caused by a waterlogged outfield, with Exeter finishing their innings on 199/8 from their alloted overs. Some fantastic bowling from Tom Coldman, Alex Hughes and Jonathan Burden guided the lads home and reduced Loughborough to "hit out or get out" cricket. Loughborough required 19 off the final over but managing just the one boundary, Exeter secured a 10 run victory. A tremendous and unbeaten season for the lads! Read more
