Alumni Sports Newsletter - Spring 2015

Varsity victory

The Men's Rugby 1st team stormed to success with a 41 - 0 win against Bath in the Annual Rugby Varsity at Sandy Park last month. With over 4,000 spectators at the home of Exeter Chiefs, the Club secured the title of BUCS South Premier Champions. The Women’s Hockey 1st team played their first Varsity and dominated the game throughout, winning 4 - 1 against Nottingham, with excellent leadership from Captain and Sports Scholar Kathryn Lane. The Men’s Hockey 1st team also took on the consistently strong and defending champions Loughborough. Even with the home crowd behind Exeter, Loughborough came through with a  5-4 win on penalty flicks.

Black Wednesday

Five of our 1st teams reached the BUCS semi-final stage but sadly won't progress to the final. Men’s and Women’s Rugby, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse and Women’s Hockey missed out, with four losses at the hands of our friends from Loughborough and Durham. Men’s Hockey 2’s and Women’s Lacrosse 2’s fared better and now progress onto their respective finals on 25 March. We currently sit in 5th position out of 154 institutions in the BUCS rankings for 2014-15.

Rowing gifts will be matched

We recently launched a rowing appeal to help fund a new boat for the University’s crews and one generous alumnus has offered to match all donations 1:1 up to £12,500. We can also claim Gift Aid on donations, meaning a qualifying gift of £100 would be worth £250 to our Boat Club. The Club recently enjoyed success in the BUCS Head in Boston, with the Women's Championship Coxed Four winning Gold by an astonishing 40 seconds. There are many ways to donate to the rowing appeal and gifts of all sizes are appreciated. Thank you to everyone who has already made a donation.

Exeter Invitational Links Trophy

Now in its 3rd year, the Exeter Invitational is part of the BUCS Student Tour, welcoming some of the most talented student golfers in the UK. Teams from Loughborough and Stirling mastered the testing conditions at Trevose Golf and Country Club with tournament organiser Craig Townsend commenting, “The blustery conditions made it a challenge for all the players. Some really stepped up their game and put in some brilliant performances with many under par rounds.” Please see the full article to read more.
