Do you know how we give back to the community?

The University is very proud of its engagement in local community initiatives, working to make Exeter a more sustainable, considerate city.

Local charity benefits from our sale of single-use plastic bags

Our team have worked to support a local charity, by raising funds through sales of single-use carrier bags.

Over the past year, the money charged for a single-use plastic bag has been collected, and we have recently held a poll among our staff to select a local charity to donate to. Force Cancer Charity came out tops, being a charity that is known by many to have given support during difficult times.

Force Cancer Charity is local to Exeter and the surrounding areas and provides treatment and support services to those affected by cancer. Anna from the Force team said that this donation is absolutely amazing, and is so welcomed especially during these difficult times of COVID where the charity has suffered massively due to the lockdowns. It has meant that their shop has been closed, and fundraising events have needed to be cancelled or postponed, so revenue has been at a fraction of what its previously been. We feel so pleased to be able to support at this time.

Other Catering and Retail Team community initiatives

  • Collection tins are in place in the Market Place shops to support Hospiscare and the RNLI
  • Pin badges are on sale in the Market Place shops and from the Reception at Reed Hall to support the RSPB
  • Market Place staff undertake their own charitable adventures, with staff having participated in treks and walks for The British Heart Foundation, Children in Need, Sports Relief and Comic Relief.
  • As part of the Plastic Free Exeter pledge, the work with KeepCup in recent years has revolutionised coffee drinking on campus. There are further plans to introduce full recycling bins to campus to allow responsible disposal of every part of a disposable cup, as well as the eradication of plastic straws and drinks stirrers.
