Exeter has partnered with the British Council and InternChina to run a bespoke internship programme exclusively for Exeter students.
Successful applicants will:
  • undertake an 8 week long internship in either Chengdu or Qingdao
  • stay in shared accommodation with 2 - 3 others
  • receive comprehensive travel insurance
  • receive pre, post and on placement support from InternChina and the British Council 

Eligible students will receive funding for all of the above, but you will still need to cover flights, visa's and spending money. Please see below for eligibility criteria.

InternChina is an award-winning organisation in the International Higher Education sector. Providing funded programmes to universities and government-funded organisations since 2007, InternChina have placed over 2000 students and recent graduates from countries all over the world in China. We aim to be an ethical, transparent and student-focused organisation, with a well-established and enthusiastic team, spread across the UK, Europe and 5 destinations in Greater China. We aim to do things differently in our sector, with off-the-beaten-track destinations, unbeatable value, unrivalled support on place in China and a ‘quality over quantity’ approach.


The British Council Generation UK - China was launched in 2013 and offers funded internships and academic scholarships for UK students to gain international experience in China. By encouraging UK students to engage with China, Generation UK aims to bring young people from both countries closer together, increase mutual understanding, and pave the way to lasting links and partnerships between the UK and China.

China Internship WP criteria

To be eligible to apply for the funded China Internship Scheme you must meet at least one of the WP categories outlined below.

You must:

1. Be a Home/EU fee paying undergraduate student

2. PLUS at least one of the following applies to you:

  • Bursary recipient*
  • Estranged from family support and in receipt of a standalone pledge bursary
  • Matue student (over 21 on point of entry to University)
  • Disability
  • Care Leaver
  • Carer
  • Refugee status
  • Distance or part-time student
  • First generation with a higher education qualification, such as a degree, diploma or certificate of higher education
  • Fair Access programme before coming to University (Realising Oportunities, Pathways to Law, Exeter Progression or mExeter Senior Scholars)
  • Home in a 'Low Participation Neighbourhood** (defined by home postcode before coming to University)
  • White Male and home in a 'Low Participation Neighbourhood'** (your last school/college before coming to University)
  • Black, Asian and minority ethnic students who attended a State School/College in a 'Low Participation Neighbourhood'** (your last school/college before coming to University)

* Bursary recipient: An 'Access to Exeter' bursary from the University of Exeter or a bursary from the Student Loans Company where your household income is under £42K

** Low Participation Neighbourhood: A neighbourhood where a low percentage of young people progress to higher education.
