Employment overview

Graduates:There are plenty of opportunities for work experience and internships in the US, but non-citizens will find it tough to secure graduate jobs. The green industry is growing, with increasing numbers of jobs in areas such as sustainable agriculture and biofuels.

Current students: We see many students who want to work in the US either over the summer or as part of their year out. It is notoriously difficult to find a placement in the US unless you are already studying there or you know someone.

Here are some things you can consider:

  • Organisations such as BUNAC, CCUSA and Americamp offer summer placements as Camp Counsellors (Camp America)
  • The Mountbatten Institute offers live, work & study programmes in New York and London for foreign nationals. The 12 month programmes include full-time work experience at a partner organisation and academic study.
  • Write tailored speculative applications to potential internship providers and utilise your network through LinkedIn
  • Websites such as the Fulbright Commission have some valuable advice.

Major industries: petroleum, steel, motor vehicles, aerospace, telecommunications, chemicals, electronics, food processing, consumer goods, lumber and mining.

Major companies: Wal-Mart, ExxonMobil, Chevron, General Electric, Bank of America Corp, AT&T, Ford Motor, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble.
