Governance and Policy
The HEAR together with the Exeter Award/Leaders Award and other areas of student engagement/achievement, is overseen by the Student Engagement and Achievement Recognition (SEAR) Group. This Group meets on a termly basis. From May 2017 this Group has been chaired by Dr Sue Prince.

Benefits to students
- The HEAR can provide a formative document and an ongoing record of achievement to help with career planning
- Exit documents are often required prior to graduation - students applying for internships and work placements will have a formal document recording their achievements thus far
- The system chosen by Exeter empowers our students, providing immediate access to their transcript and putting them in charge of issuing it to prospective employers
Benefits to Employers
- Degree transcripts have traditionally been viewed as unfit for purpose and limited in scope. The HEAR provides a more detailed picture of a student’s achievements and experience and can be used as part of the recruitment and selection process.
Benefits to the University
- Enabling the student to take ownership of issuing their transcript provides administrative savings
- Implementing the HEAR has allowed us to examine and streamline business processes
- The HEAR complements a range of strategic initiatives across the University.
Timescale for the introduction of the HEAR at the University
- The HEAR was ‘soft launched’ in November 2014, initially making it available to 2014 graduates
- At the July 2015 graduation, those graduating from undergraduate courses received the first HEARs incorporating details of extracurricular achievements
- The HEAR was made available to taught postgraduates starting with those graduating in January 2016
- More achievements have been incorporated into the HEAR (see list here)
- Options will be considered to introduce an interim HEAR to continuing students as a formative document to aid career planning.
The implementation of the HEAR was overseen by a Project Board chaired by Professor Timothy Quine, with representation from academics, Colleges, Employability and Graduate Development, Education and Quality Enhancement, Registry, Student Services, Exeter IT, Students' Guild, FXU and Athletics Union. The board held its final meeting in February 2016.
The HEAR has now reached a 'steady state' and together with the Exeter Award/Leaders Award and other areas of student engagement/achievement, is overseen by a single steering group, the Student Engagement and Achievement Recognition (SEAR) Group. This Group meets on a termly basis.
