Who are we...?

MAGPIE stands for Modelling Advisory Group Public Involvement and Engagement.

We are a group of people from all sorts of backgrounds with a wide range of skills and experiences. What we have in common is a passion for public involvement in science and research.

Our mission:

To ensure an effective public voice in the Centre for Biomedical Modelling and Analysis and biomedical sciences more broadly, and to promote a public understanding of, and involvement in, biomedical research.

What do we do:

  • We work with researchers from the Centre to develop public facing communications and ensure that where necessary plain English is used!
  • We help develop public engagement activities for public festivals.
  • The Centre funds “Seed Corn projects” which encourage researchers from different disciplines to work together to solve biomedical problems. MAGPIES are an integral part of the funding process, from helping decide which projects receive funding, to taking part in the the two day event where the research proposals are worked up into fully funded projects. At this event, MAGPIES work closely with researchers to develop appropriate public involvement and engagement opportunities in the projects and encourage researchers to think about the real world problems their research is addressing.
  • We help shape future research. As Seed Corn projects develop into much larger grant applications to external funding bodies, MAGPIES will support researchers in planning their public involvement and engagement strategies and may also have an influence on the focus or direction of that research.
