University of Exeter to showcase research at Royal Cornwall Show

Students and staff from the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus will be at the Royal Cornwall Show again this year to showcase research taking place in Cornwall.

Through interactive displays and hands-on activities, visitors will learn about research from various fields in a fun and family-friendly way.

Staff from the Geology and Geography departments will be at the University’s stand with an “Augmented Reality Sandbox” which combines a real sandbox with virtual projections.

Visitors are invited to come and create their own landscape in the sand while a simulated map, including water flow and contour lines, responds to the changing model in real-time.

“The Augmented Reality Sandbox is a great educational resource for any age,” said Calum Beeson, Geology teaching lab manager at the University of Exeter.

“Its visual representation of contour lines and water flow brings the subject to life. The sandbox can teach principles of geology and geography in many areas – and most of all it’s really great fun.”

Meanwhile, University of Exeter geneticists will show people how to extract DNA from fruit, and share some of the genomic research that is being conducted at the University.

For those more interested in history and English, experts will be on hand to explore your understanding of areas including military history, Cornish identity and modern literature.

Three Renewable Energy Engineering students will be demonstrating their eco-friendly mobile phone charging unit. Visitors will be able to take a mobile charging unit free of charge (although a £10 deposit will be required).

The Cornwall School Games mascot, Chuffy, will also be visiting the stand on Saturday for photos and to talk about our sponsorship of the games.

The University of Exeter stand will be open for all three days of the Royal Cornwall Show, which takes place in Wadebridge on 8, 9 and 10 June.
