Arts and Humanities at Exeter is now ranked 83rd in the world.

Arts and Humanities strengthen top 100 position in influential rankings

The flourishing international reputation and research strengths of the University of Exeter’s Arts and Humanities subjects have been recognised in the latest leading rankings.

The influential Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings have placed Arts and Humanities firmly in the top 100.

The subjects are placed 83rd in the latest edition of the rankings, released today (October 2nd 2019), rising from 99th last year.

THE’s global rankings are judged on research citations and international outlook as a key indicator of the subjects’ worldwide reputation.

Professor Andrew Thorpe, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean for the College of Humanities at the University of Exeter said: “We are delighted to see such a significant rise in these latest rankings.

“It is a true reflection of the excellent quality of research and teaching in all disciplines, as well as the dynamic and stimulating atmosphere found within the College. Colleagues and students alike can feel very proud of this outstanding outcome.”

The subject ranking is the latest success for Exeter on the national and international stage.

Earlier this year, and for the fifth consecutive year, Exeter ranked in the 151-200 category worldwide in the The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2019. Within the UK, the rankings placed Exeter between 17th and 21st, comparable to the past two years.

The University also ranked 24th in the world, ninth in Europe, and sixth in the UK, in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019, which offers key insights into the scientific performance of major universities. Exeter’s rankings are based on the percentage of publications ranked in the top 10% most cited, indicating that the University’s high-quality research has been referenced by other academics in major journals.

Exeter recently also secured 10th position in the influential Guardian University Guide 2020, while subjects across the sciences and humanities were also recognised as being among the very best in the country, with 37 subjects ranked in the top 20 - including 27 in the top ten - in the latest Complete University Guide 2020.
