Exeter named as runner-up in University of the Year award

Exeter has been named as runner-up in the coveted University of the Year award in the influential The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023.

The University also recorded a significant rise in the overall national ranking, moving to 13th position, it has been announced today (Friday, September 16th 2022).

High levels of student satisfaction, quality of teaching and graduate employment prospects are all highlighted as key factors in Exeter’s success in the notable ranking.

Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter said: “We are absolutely thrilled that the University of Exeter has secured the runner-up position in this important ranking, as well as a significant rise in the overall league table position.

“This result is a testament to the partnership between our staff and students to continue to drive Exeter to continued success and enhancement of all that we do.

“As we mark a successful first year in the delivery of our new strategy, this achievement is one that we can celebrate within our University community, and also with our partners regionally, nationally and internationally, who play an integral role in achieving our ambitions to create a greener, heathier and fairer society for all.”

The The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 is made up of nine indicators including student satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider student experience, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, and degree completion rates.

These are the latest rankings this year that reflect Exeter’s position amongst the world’s leading universities.

The University broke into the top 150 in the QS World University Rankings for the first time, securing 149th position, in the latest table, while the University was also ranked as the 46th most international university worldwide, based on data from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

In August, Exeter was also ranked in the 101-150 grouping in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), compiled by Shanghai Ranking.

Student satisfaction at the University of Exeter was also recognised as the best of any Russell Group university in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2022, published in July.
