Update on lockdown restrictions for staff - 11 May 2020

Dear colleagues,

Following the Prime Minister’s briefing last night, I want to reassure you that we have already begun to consider our approach to these changes. We will review the new government guidance when this is published later today, and I will communicate our next steps in my Registrar’s email on Wednesday.

As we develop our own response and plans, I would like to make it clear that restrictions currently remain in place across all our campuses.

The health, safety and wellbeing of colleagues, students and wider community is our top priority.

It is very important that we all continue to adhere to the restrictions in place – this means that:

  • If you are currently working at home then you should continue to do so until you have explicit notice from your manager that you should return.  You should not visit the campus unless you have been authorised to do so by your Service Director, Director of College Operations or Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
  • If you have been working on campus during the restrictions, there will be no change to your current arrangements. Please carry out your work and leave the campus at the earliest opportunity so you do not remain within buildings any longer than is necessary.

This approach continues to support the Government’s stance of reducing the unintended spread of COVID 19 and has the full support of Devon and Cornwall Police.

We will give you as much notice as possible of when we expect colleagues to return to campus. We are aware that there will be many staff and students who are shielding or have caring responsibilities as well as other circumstances where returning to work may not be possible for some time. Please ensure your manager is aware of your circumstances and any concerns you may have.

As we begin to get through the immediate challenges of the pandemic, we will also be exploring how the University’s operations may need to change over the medium to long-term. More detail around this will be circulated over the coming weeks.

To reiterate, I will be providing more detail on our approach to the safe restart of our activities in my email on Wednesday. In the meantime, I would request that colleagues please wait for this information and do not contact the Coronavirus enquiries team unless absolutely necessary. This will allow the team to focus on providing support to our students during the exam period.

I know this remains a challenging and uncertain time and I would like to thank you all for your patience as we work through a plan to safely reopen our campuses.

Best wishes,

Mike Shore-Nye,
Registrar and Secretary
