Student Communications and Social Media

Student Communications and Social Media

Our team is responsible for communicating with students and managing the University’s social media accounts to reflect the richness and energy of university life. Our student communications staff deliver key messages and provide another channel for feedback. Our social media staff work across the institution to deliver up-to-date information, deliver marketing for recruitment and give and insight into the life of the University.

Our channels of communication include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, You Tube and LinkedIn, plus student email newsletters. We work closely with our students’ unions and staff across the University to ensure we provide the best service possible. We also help with content for the student recruitment team, our alumni and others.

Staff can access our Academic Communications Toolkits here.‌

Student Communications team

The Student Communications team is headed up by Jo Cole – Student Communications Manager.

Student Communications Manager

My career began in journalism as a reporter and newsreader working for the BBC, ITV and regional newspapers. I was also the first Communications Manager for Eton College – responsible for seeing the famous school through a momentous year which included a change of Headmaster and the opening of two large-scale building projects.

During my career at the University I have headed up communications for the alumni and fundraising department, as well as some of the largest scale capital projects including the Forum.

I recently achieved a Professional Certificate in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

I’m lucky to live in Cornwall with my family and in my spare time write novels.

Student Communications Assistant

My life at Exeter started in 2016 where I joined the University as a History Undergraduate. In my final year I was elected by the student body to become the 2019-20 Athletic Union President, where I represented students on issues relating to sport and physical activity.

As a member of the ’Student Communications’ team I support student communications and engagement across the University, ensuring that the needs of students are at the heart of all our planned activity. I support the implementation and delivery of a number of key campaigns such as the promotion and use of student feedback, wellbeing and the National Student Survey.

Outside of work I am undertaking a Law Conversion Course. I am also a qualified rugby coach and referee, and have held a position on the RFU’s Diversity & Inclusion Working Group. Today I continue to volunteer in sport as a member of the BUCS Student Advisory Group.

My responsibilities include supporting the creation and distribution of the weekly student email newsletter ‘University Updates’, recording and editing episodes for the University podcast ‘Exeplore’ and supporting the National Student Survey campaign.

During my degree I enjoyed volunteering as a committee member for the Amnesty International society, playing intramural netball, attending yoga classes and working as a Fundraising and Marketing Intern for Age UK Exeter.

Student Communications Assistant - Law School

I began working for the University of Exeter in January 2022 after graduating with a Master’s degree in News Journalism from Cardiff University. I also previously worked as a freelance journalist, with my work appearing in DevonLive, The South Wales Echo and The Express & Echo.

As a Communications Assistant for the Law School, I support in delivering key messages to students and help create a community to ensure that everyone feels included. To do this, I produce newsletters, manage social media channels and keep the Law School website regularly updated.

Student Communications Officer

I joined the student communications team in January 2022. My role has a particular focus on student wellbeing and safety, along with supporting colleges in their communications with students. Living in Falmouth I also provide local support to the Cornwall campuses.

I hold a CIM diploma in marketing and have a broad background in marketing communications including for local authorities and independent schools. I previously worked for FX Plus on the University’s shared Penryn Campus, supporting cross-campus campaigns to promote sustainability, campus services and facilities, and the opening of the Penryn Campus Sports Centre.

I am a huge advocate of plain language and keeping it simple, and work with colleagues and students to provide clear and relevant information for our student community.
