ELECDEM project news items from 2012.

12.12.12 - Advanced Research Fellows HASS Strategy ( up to 20), University of Exeter

We're delighted to offer up to 20 new Advanced Research Fellowships (3 year fellowship term leading to Lectureship), to support the University's Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) Research Strategy in the following thematic areas:

* Environment and Sustainability
* Global Uncertainties
* Identities and Beliefs
* Medical Humanities
* Science, Technology and Culture
* Societal and Lifestyle Shifts

The closing date for applications is 30 January 2013.  The salary will be in the range of  £31,948 - £39,257 per annum.

07.12.12 - Associate Research Fellow in Politics (0.75 FTE), University of Exeter

This part time (75% FTE) post is available on a fixed term basis from 15 April 2013 to 30 June 2014. 

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Prof Jeffrey Karp and other collaborators on the ESRC-funded project "Comparative Cross-National Electoral Research" (CCNER). The post is in the Centre for Elections, Media, & Parties (CEMaP).  The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent in political science or a related area of study, and the ability to work with large datasets.

 

27.11.12 - Associate Research Fellow in Politics (full time), University of Exeter

This full time post is available on a fixed term basis from 1 March 2013 to 30 April 2014 for 14 months from appointment in the first instance in the College of Social Sciences and International Studies. 

We are seeking to appoint an Associate Research Fellow to work on the ESRC funded project "Advancing Understanding in News Information, Political Knowledge and Media Systems Research." The ARF will be responsible for data preparation and analysis, planning workshops and preparing manuscripts for publication.

 

05.10.12 Zoltan Fazekas passes his DPhil viva

Zoltan Fazekas, one of the ELECDEM early stage researchers at the University of Vienna, has passed his DPhil viva. Zoltan worked on work package 7, Party Competition and Vote Choice Models: A Comparative Approach, and was supervised by Prof. Sylvia Kritzinger.

10.09.12 Postdoctoral Fellowships at the European University Institute

The joint ExIStA RSS local group meeting will be held on Monday 19th November 2012 from 12-1pm in the Laver building, Room 320 (No 22. on the campus map).  Invited speaker Professor David Spiegelhalter will give the following seminar: "Don't know, can't know: communicating risk and deeper uncertainty".

10.09.12 Postdoctoral Fellowships at the European University Institute

The EUI is seeking applications for Max Weber and Jean Monnet fellowships. The deadline for applications for the academic year 2013-2014 is 25 October 2012.

14.09.12 Zoltan Fazekas appointed at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense

Zoltan Fazekas, one of the ELECDEM early stage researchers at the University of Vienna, has been appointed to a Post-Doc position in the ‘Determinants of Political Beliefs and Behaviour Revisited: Heritability, Personality, and Situations" research group, in the Department of Political Science and Public Management, University of Southern Denmark, Odense. He will take up the post on 1 of December, 2012.

11.09.12 Call for Papers ECPR Joint Sessions 2013

Susan Banducci, Sylvia Kritzinger and Heiko Giebler have successfully submitted a workshop proposal for the 2013 ECPR Joint Sessions in Mainz (11 - 16 March 2013).  The title of the workshop is “Electoral Competitiveness in Cross-National Research: Challenges and New Directions” (workshop number 24) and is endorsed by the Standing Group on ‘Public Opinion and Voting Behaviour in a Comparative Perspective’.   The deadline for paper submissions 5 November 2012 with proposals submitted directly via MyECPR.

10.09.12 MZES Postdoctoral Fellowships x 2,

MZES seeks to recruit two outstanding social scientists (preferably sociologists or political scientists) as Postdoctoral Fellows to work in MZES Research Areas A: ‘European Societies and their Integration’ or B: ‘European Political Systems and their Integration’.  The deadline for applications is 6 October 2012.  Applications should be made online.

03.09.2012 Agnieszka Walczak begins work at RAND Europe

Agnieszka Walczak, one of the early stage researchers employed at the University of Amsterdam, has taken a position as an Associate Analyst in the Defence & Security Team of RAND Europe (Cambridge office). RAND Europe is an independent not-for-profit research institute whose mission is to help improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis. Research undertaken in the Security & Defence Team encompasses key defence issues in the national and European sphere, such as integration of the European defence maket, procurement and personel policies.

31.08.12 Zsolt Kiss passes his DPhil viva

Zsolt Kiss, one of the ELECDEM early stage researchers at the University of Oxford, has passed his DPhil viva with minor corrections. His thesis title was 'The Emotional Voter: The Effects of Electoral Campaigns and Emotions on Electoral Behaviour in Britain' and he was supervised by Prof. Sara Hobolt and Prof. Raymond Duch.

16.08.2012 Researcher presentations from final conference now on YouTube

The recordings of a selection of the researcher presentations that were given at the Advancing Electoral Research conference are now available to view and download via the ELECDEM project channel on YouTube.

08.08.2012 Exeter Initiative for Statistics and its Applications forthcoming events

The first ExIStA event aimed at those at the beginning of their career will be held on October 17th 2012 from 4-6pm. This event is specifically for early career statisticians to provide them with an opportunity to meet others at the same stage in their career.  We expect those who are currently in or within five years of postgraduate study to be interested in attending, but there are no hard and fast rules!

20.07.2012 Final project conference held at EUI in Florence

The final conference of the ELECDEM project was held at the EUI in Florence on 28-30 June 2012.

18.06.2012 Thomas Vitiello collects Elizabeth H. Nelson Prize for best paper ...

Thomas Vitiello, Ali Çarkoğlu and Mert Moral have received the Elizabeth H. Nelson Prize prize for the Best Paper from a Society in Transition.  The presentation took place at the 2012 WAPOR annual conference in Hong-Kong 14-16 June.

21.05.2012 Bill Venables talks R at Augsburg University on 2-3 July 2012

Bill Venables will give a two-day R Workshop in Augsburg on the 2nd and 3rd July 2012.  This is an expanded version of the course which he has been invited to give at this year's useR! meeting in Nashville in June ("a gentle survey of modern data analysis, graphics, and statistical modeling in the style of Modern Applied Statistics with S, Venables' classic textbook with co-author Brian D. Ripley"). 

08.05.2012 Keynote speakers confirmed at closing conference

We are delighted to announce that Dennis Chong (Northwestern University) and Gabriel Lenz (University of California, Berkley) have been confirmed as keynote speakers at the ELECDEM closing conference.

19.04.2012 Data Linkages in Cross-National Electoral Research

Call for papers.  We are seeking paper proposals from researchers working in the area of comparative electoral behaviour who link data across units and or levels. For example, linking media content data to survey data or candidate data to data on political party manifestos. The workshop will begin with two expert talks from Bernhard Wessels (WZB) and Natalie Shlomo (Southampton).  Travel bursaries are available.

29.03.2012 German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES)

Data of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) available for free download.  The German Longitudinal Election Study is the largest national election study ever undertaken in Germany. Over three subsequent periods of funding, it examines the German federal elections 2009, 2013, and 2017.

27.03.2012 Launch of French Presidential Compass 2012

The first French Presidential Compass 2012 is launched today by CEVIPOF and Kieskompas.  The site has both French and English versions of the tool.

29.02.2012 Marco Steenbergen presentations now live on YouTube

A complete set of Marco Steenbergen's presentations are available for viewing on the ELECDEM YouTube channel.  These include sessions covering Hierarchical Linear Models, Multilevel Logit Models for Binary and Ordinal Dependent Variables, and the Multilevel Multinomial Logit Model.

18.01.2012 Fellowship opportunities CEU, Budapest 2012-13

The CEU Institute for Advanced Study (CEU -IAS) invites applications for its core fellowship program for the academic year 2012-13.  Both senior and junior level scholars (maximum 6 years post PhD) are welcome to apply. Scholars reside in Budapest during their 9-month fellowship year and pursue independent research in an environment conducive to focused scholarship.
