LGBT+ History Month 2021

LGBT+ History Month 2021

LGBT+ History Month 2021

LGBT+ History Month celebrates annually, throughout the month of February, to provide education and awareness of the issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community and works to combat prejudice against it.

Since 2005 it has taken place on February in the UK and observes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.

For LGBT+ History Month 2021 the theme is Body, Mind and Spirit.

LGBT+ people at the ballot box

Is there an LGBT+ vote? If so, how does the LGBT+ vote behave at the ballot box? What explains their behaviour? Where do they stand on some of the most important issues facing voters in British politics today - are they Brexiteers or Remainers? Do they support a national lockdown, or do they want pubs and clubs to stay open?

Dr Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte, Assistant Professor in Political Science at King's College London, will present some of his recent work in which he provides answers to these questions and more.

Viral Sites: Scott Burton's Sculpture, Undetectability, and Public Art in the First Decade of the AIDS Crisis in the U.S.

Scott Burton was one of the most well-known proponents of the new public art in the United States in the 1980s, and his work involved making site-specific sculptures of furniture that served the public.  These seemingly innocuous functional artworks, however, were based in Burton’s long-running investigation into the queer experiences of public space, cruising, and dissemblance.  Burton’s sculptures hide in plain sight, and this talk will examine their undetectability in the context of the first decade of the on-going AIDS crisis.  Burton’s sculpture was both materially and conceptually tied up with the cultural battles overrepresentation and contagion, and his works allow for an alternate account of the visibility politics that tend to dominate histories of AIDS and queer art in the 1980s.

Beyond the Binary: Scientific Thinking about Sex 1900-1950

In this talk Dr Chiara Beccalossi (University of Lincoln) will examine how, with the understanding of intersex variations and how hormones and chromosomes function, the traditional binary definition of sex was challenged at the beginning of the twentieth century. She will also discuss how science has increasingly seen not only gender, but also sex, as a spectrum of degrees between male and female.

A Great Unrecorded History - LGBTQ + History and Heritage

Join us for this LGBT History Month talk with Richard Bruce Parkinson. LGBTQ+ desire and identity are embodied in human artefacts across all periods and cultures of world history, from Ancient Egypt to works by living artists such as David Hockney. The lecture will discuss the evolution of a long-term LGBTQ+ world history project at the British Museum in a variety of formats, including the ground-breaking book A Little Gay History (2013), and subsequent exhibitions and trails. It will consider why LGBTQ+ histories are important and how they are best displayed—as temporary interventions or as integrated parts of permanent displays— and reflect on the role of historians in presenting this heritage and in upholding human rights.
