Research Services

We provide effective support for the delivery, monitoring and oversight of the Research and Impact Strategy across its four pillars:

  • Building a World Class research environment
  • Growing a global research reputation for Exeter
  • Driving Impact and Partnership
  • Delivering a sustainable business model for Research


Key deliverables for 2018/19

  • Deliver an informed, academic-focused and efficient service in support of the full project lifecycle and in fulfilment of University and College 18/19 targets for applications, awards, income and cost recovery
  • Work with Colleges to establish University and College targets for application, awards, income, cost recovery and PGR student numbers, as part of the 18/19 planning process that are ambitious and deliver a sustainable portfolio
  • Support the development and research operations of University Institutes
  • Ensure effective operation of Dual Assurance,  RIEG, College research committees and equivalents, and funder strategy groups
  • Deliver on all relevant strategic projects including Institute of Data Science launch and Platform Technologies roadmap
  • Ensure action plan from Research Monitoring 2018 is followed up focussing on key areas requiring attention following publication of national guidelines
  • Support the University and Colleges to facilitate a strong research environment and culture
  • Develop our Code of Practice for the Research Excellence Framework to enhance our performance on Equality and Diversity matters, including supporting relevant institutional targets
  • Deliver researcher development strategy and delivery, aligned with Exeter Academic, for academics at all career stages in collaboration with the Doctoral College.
  • Respond to any relevant insights from the sector benchmarking exercises, to deliver a sector leading efficient and effective service to the university
  • Implementation of Research Management system project 
  • Understand the feedback from our staff from e.g. the Employer Engagement Survey, and deliver an agreed staff action plan

Service provided

  • Supporting the full life cycle of research projects, from horizon scanning for opportunities, research development of applications through to research project management & delivery (including financial management) and post-project development and reporting
  • Joint strategic, policy and planning support to the University and Colleges to build and sustain an excellent research environment for our academics
  • Deliver an efficient and effective service, with continuous improvement, high levels of staff satisfaction and transparent opportunities for development and the transference of skills across the service

Establish, with Colleges, University and College targets for application, awards, income and cost recovery, and PGR student numbers, aiming for a sustainable portfolio.

To lead and support strategic interventions, including delivery of the Research and Impact Strategy, with support for relevant governance.

To work with Colleges to ensure the University’s research is assessed as of the highest standard possible, through research monitoring and preparations for national research excellence framework exercises.

Embed and monitor effectiveness of new Research Services Directorate and ways of working.
