Things to do during spare time at an Exeter conference

No Time To Spare?

If your time has been eaten up in a never ending itinerary, don’t despair. A great way to relax and start your long day is exercise. Here at the University of Exeter, our newly built Sports Park opens at 6.30am, giving you plenty of time for a cardio blast to get you going in the morning. If you prefer more of a gentle wake up call, forget the blast and come for a spot of yoga, you’ll be feeling Zen in no time.

A Free Hour?

Everything on our self contained campus is within a 10 minute walk. Have a wander and explore the wildflower fields and the resident wildlife. Grab a book and a bench (or a nice spot of lush green grass) and sit by the pond or in the beautiful botanical gardens surrounding the campus enjoying a read or a people watch. If you fancy a little cinematic culture, why not visit the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, home to one of the largest collections of material relating to the moving image in Britain. Have a look at our ideas of things to do on campus.

A Morning Or Afternoon To Yourself?

With a few hours spare your options open up a little more. Why not take a short trip into Exeter City Centre. The regular bus from the campus will get you there in minutes, or if it’s a sunny day you can walk in around 20 minutes. Watch the world go by in Boston Tea Party with a delicious coffee and cake or on Exeter Cathedral green whilst admiring one of England’s most impressive Medieval cathedrals. If shopping is more your thing you’ll love Exeter – whether you’re into high street fashion or vintage boutiques, there’s something for you. Department store lovers are also in for a treat with a huge John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser to browse and damage your bank balance. For some culture, why not visit the RAMM Museum where you’ll encounter a wonderful and diverse collection of over one million individual objects and specimens from all over the world.

An Evening To Explore?

An evening out in Exeter can be many things. There are plenty of great places to eat in the vibrant city and a variety of tempting wine bars. If you’d rather let your hair down a little with some live music, take a look at the Heart of Devon website to see what’s on. Cocktails are best served at the Cosy Club or if you fancy a real treat, pop down to the Magdalen Chapter for Friday Fizz or one of their other decadent offerings. If you’re seeking a little escapism, comedy and theatre are also easy to find close by, have a look what’s on at the Northcott Theatre and Exeter Phoenix.

A Day Out In And Around Devon

If you’re lucky enough to get a free day, or you’ve tagged on an extra day to your event you’re in for a treat. Devon is a beautiful place to explore. Long walks, picnics and fresh air are just a short trip away in Dartmoor. Or you can really blow the cobwebs away at some of Britains best beaches.
