A Taste of the Best
With rolling green fields, vast stretches of coastline and lashings of open space, it comes as no surprise that Food and Drink in the South West is positively booming. The region boasts a plethora of unique and outstanding local suppliers that deserve to be celebrated.
Taste of the West is a membership organisation, recognising high quality, local food and drink across the South West.
Once a year, members, including food and drink producers, distributors, restaurants, cafes, pubs, hotels and farm shops, come together for the Champion Award Winners ceremony. An opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the finest in the region.
Local food at its finest
This year, in its 25th year, organisers chose to put the event in the capable hands of the Event Exeter team, who hosted the sell-out event in the Great Hall.
‘It’s a great and rather prestigious location, with a space big enough to hold our event (at which we seat 400). We believe that the Event Exeter team have a similar ethos to that of Taste of the West. Keeping it local and supporting as many local businesses as possible’ – Awards Programme Manager, Belinda Berwick.
Guests enjoyed a sumptuous 5 course menu, brimming with fresh local produce, supplied by Taste of the West award winners and beautifully prepared by the University team of chefs, which given the target audience was no mean feat.
An extensive list of local culinary delights featured on the menu, a few examples being:
- Brian Etherington’s Glazed Belly of Pork
- Pulled Red Ruby Brisket with Arkell’s IPA
- Hillside Food’s Smokey BBQ Sauce and Quince Honey Farm’s Devon Honey
Lunch culminated in local teas and coffees served alongside:
BBC television and radio presenters, Victoria Graham and David Fitzgerald presented some 40 awards to a mixture of food and drink businesses from across the South West.
A roaring success
Belinda went on to say, ‘We were so delighted with our 2017 Taste of the West Awards Lunch held in the Great Hall at Exeter University, managed by the Event Exeter team. What a team! It’s not the easiest of events to stage and as an organisation we are quite particular. The Event Exeter team carried out every aspect with efficiency, patience and professionalism, giving informed advice, where appropriate, to ensure our day went without a hitch; which it did – nothing was too much trouble. As for the food; beautifully prepared, wonderfully presented, utterly delicious…simply outstanding! For the first time in 10 years, I could actually relax and enjoy my day!’
