DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday 12 May Time: 13:35 – 14:25 Location: Harrison 004 Speaker: Professor Kenneth J. Falconer (University of St Andrews)Title: Coffee and Custard: Aspects of Fractal Percolation. Abstract: The fractal percolation process, which was introduced by Mandelbrot in the 1970s, is an iterative random construction leading to a statistically self-similar fractal. This talk will present this construction and review some old and new properties of the resulting random fractal and its variants. Since it is International Women in Maths Day on 12 May, we will also be celebrating this occasion by showing a short film about the journeys of women in mathematics at 2.45pm in Harrison 004. Please do join us if you are able! 749561
