DESCRIPTION:Please save the date for our exciting workshop Collage in the Academy with Dr Catherine Cartwright where the attendees can explore and reflect on how collaging may have a part to play in your teaching and/or research practice. This is a practical session where you will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials (not just magazines!), create your own collage papers, and consider the potential for incorporating collage into your academic work. Participants may wish to explore the related publication “Balancing Complexity and Care: Collage as a Method of Analysis to Explore Teachers’ Views on Gender‑based Violence” which connects closely with the focus of this workshop. Dr Cartwright is a visual artist and researcher who mainly works in printmaking to explore current social and political issues—especially the tension between power and powerlessness. She's interested in how we, both as individuals and as a society, learn about and engage with difficult knowledge, so that we are empowered rather than overwhelmed. Her work is grounded in reading, research, and community involvement. She has a Masters in Multidisciplinary Printmaking (distinction) from the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK (2018). Her PhD, awarded 2024, was a deep dive into ‘trauma-informed’ artist practice and the potential of collage for both trauma-informed practice and research methodology. Her thesis funded by the South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, Arts and Humanities Research Board can be found here. She offers training in trauma-informed collage both with community groups and as a research method.751420
