DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday 11 June Time: 13:35 – 14:25 Location: Green LT(E)/Newman Speaker: Professor Michael Goldstein (Durham University) Title: MODEL DISCREPANCY Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss the importance of structural discrepancy, namely the difference between models and the real world systems that the models are supposed to represent. We will describe various techniques for quantifying such discrepancy, distinguishing between internal discrepancy (which may be assessed directly from the model itself) and external discrepancy (which relates to features that cannot be so assessed). We will discuss how such analysis should be integrated into the general workflow of model building and analysis.768759
