DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Leigh Fletcher, University of Leicester Title: Lifting Jupiter’s Cloudy Veil: From Juno and JWST, to JUICE Abstract: Juno’s exploration of Jupiter since 2016, coupled with new investigations by JWST since 2022, have yielded new insights into the atmospheric dynamics and composition of this archetypal giant planet. This presentation will use visible, infrared, and microwave observations to reveal how Jupiter’s banded structure, large vortices (like the Great Red Spot), and smaller cyclonic storm systems vary with depth, from the radiatively-controlled upper troposphere, down into the hidden weather layer. We will also discuss the dynamics and chemistry of the jovian poles, a unique interface between the giant planet atmosphere and the external space plasma environment. Finally, we will look ahead to JUICE’s arrival at Jupiter in 2031, and the scientific potential of the multi-wavelength instrument package for new Jupiter science.770033
