COVID-19: Given the current situation we only have access to our post twice a week and therefore will be responding to any communication or donations received more slowly than normal. If you would like to make a donation please use the online facilities where possible and if you need to contact us, please do so via email. If we do not have your up-to-date email address for communications, please let us know here.

Thank you for your understanding.

Although the Campaign has finished, you can still make a gift to the University of Exeter if you would like. Every gift makes a huge difference to our students and to our research capabilities - thank you for supporting us.

Call us today on 01392 725640 to securely make a donation over the phone, or alternatively you can donate by using one of the methods below:

Legacies from supporters provide invaluable and transformational support to the work of the University. The University of Exeter is a charity which means that EITHER your donation will be taken off the value of your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated OR, if you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, your Inheritance Tax rate would be reduced.

Donors residing in the US can make their donation tax effectively by giving to the University of Exeter US Foundation. The University of Exeter US Foundation is a public tax-exempt charitable body organised under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the US Code. The Foundation was established to help link former students who now live and work in America as well as providing support to the University.

The University of Exeter is registered with the Hong Kong Foundation for Charities (HKFC). The HKFC allows donors who reside in Hong Kong to make donations to organisations outside of Hong Kong in a tax-efficient manner, as they are able to issue gift receipts for Hong Kong tax purposes. Hong Kong tax payers should make their donations via the University of Exeter Hong Kong Foundation for Charities’ website.

Your gift can often be enhanced by a variety of tax breaks for charitable action. If you would like to talk to us about any of the below, please email exceptional@exeter.ac.uk.

Maximising your giving - UK

UK residents can make tax-efficient charitable donations via a number of schemes.

As well as this, your employer may operate a scheme whereby it will match gifts you make to charities. You can usually find out about these schemes from your organisation’s human resources department.

Gift Aid

You can use Gift Aid to boost the value of your donation by as much as 25p for every £1 that you give. Gift Aid allows us to recover the basic rate income tax paid on any gift as long as you are a UK taxpayer. This means that a £100 gift with Gift Aid is worth £125 to Exeter.

In order for gifts to be eligible for Gift Aid, the donor must be a UK taxpayer who will have paid an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the University will reclaim on the gifts in the tax year in which they are made. Higher rate taxpayers may get further tax relief – consult your advisor or the HMRC website for details. Donations from companies are not eligible for Gift Aid. However, the company can treat the gift as an allowable expense, making a saving on corporation tax.

Higher rate tax relief

If you pay tax at either the higher (40%) or additional rate (45%), you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and basic rate on your donation. You can do this by either your self-assessment tax return or by asking HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to amend your tax code.

Payroll giving

For alumni who want to give to us:

Through Payroll Giving, you can make a regular donation whilst benefitting from tax relief - for example, every £10 you give will only cost you £8, saving £2 at the basic tax rate (higher rate taxpayers will only pay £6).

All you need to do is ask your payroll department to deduct a regular donation from your salary. You may also need to supply them with our charity number, which is X9538.

For University of Exeter Staff:

University of Exeter staff can make a donation to our Campaign via Payroll Giving. Simply complete and submit the Donation Choice Form and Charitable Giving South West (our Payroll Giving provider) will do the rest – they will advise our payroll department of the deduction from your pay and then distribute the money when your payroll deduction is received.

The major benefit of giving this way is the tax saving you will receive as donations are taken before income tax is applied. For example, a £10 pledge ‘costs’ a standard rate tax payer £8 and a higher rate tax payer £6, but the nominated charity still receives £10.

If you have any questions, please contact Charitable Giving by telephoning 01822 611180 or by email at mail@charitablegiving.co.uk

The University of Exeter is contracted with Charitable Giving (Registered Charity No 1128013 Company Registration No 6754603), an HMRC-Approved Payroll Giving Agency, to administer its Payroll Giving scheme.

Legacies and reducing inheritance tax

Gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax (IHT) in the UK. EITHER your donation will be taken off the value of your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated OR, if you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, your Inheritance Tax rate would be reduced.

For more on legacies click here.

Gifts of share and securities

You can also give a donation in the form of quoted shares. This method gives donors a double tax benefit as individuals can set the full value of their gift against their liability for income tax in the tax year that the gift is made. This is in addition to exemption from capital gains tax on the disposal of the shares. A similar provision now applies to companies is respect of corporation tax. More information is available from HM Revenue and Customs.

Gifts from Europe

Donors residing in Europe may be able to maximise their gifts through Transnational Giving Europe (TGE).

This is a collaborative giving scheme offered by a partnership of European foundations. It enables donors (both corporations and individuals) resident in one of the participating countries to offer financial support to non-profit organisations in other member countries. Beneficiaries benefit directly from the tax advantages provided for in the legislation of their country of residence.

More information is available on the TGE site.

Gifts from the USA

Donors residing in the US can make their donation tax effectively by giving to the University of Exeter US Foundation. The University of Exeter US Foundation is a public tax-exempt charitable body organised under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the US Code. The Foundation was established to help link former students who now live and work in America as well as providing support to the University.

Gifts from Canada

Please make your donation by either credit card or cheque above. On receipt of you gift we will send you the appropriate receipt required under Canadian Law. This will allow you to offset your gift against income in Canada.

Gifts from Hong Kong

The University of Exeter is registered with the Hong Kong Foundation for Charities (HKFC). The HKFC allows donors who reside in Hong Kong to make donations to organisations outside of Hong Kong in a tax-efficient manner, as they are able to issue gift receipts for Hong Kong tax purposes.
