Prestigious Scholarships for Exeter golfers

The R&A (Royal & Ancient) have increased their support of golf at the University of Exeter by awarding Foundation Scholarships to nine leading student golfers.

Exeter is one of 15 universities that receive support from the R&A to support talented golfers and encourage students to take up the sport and play regularly. These scholarships further strengthen the relationship between the two organisations and will help to ensure the best young golfers are able to achieve their potential.

Alison Davidson, Director of Sport at the University of Exeter said: “The University has a proud tradition for golfing excellence and our students have access to great coaching and facilities. We're delighted to continue to work closely with the R&A and these latest Foundation Scholarship awards will enable us to help our top golfing students to fulfil their potential in both academia and sport."

Jackie Davidson, Assistant Director – Golf Development at the R&A said: “We are committed to supporting the next generation of golfers to reach their potential, as well as encouraging young people to have fun and stay fit and healthy through sport. The University of Exeter has invested heavily in its golf programme in recent years and we look forward to continuing to work with them to achieve our aims."

The 2017 R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament at St Andrews in April was won by current Exeter student Emily Toy, who also went on to play in the Ladies European Tour in the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in Dubai.

Also this year, the University's Women's team qualified to compete at the European Universities Championships in Liberec in the Czech Republic. The team brought home the bronze medal after finishing third overall in a competitive field.

Exeter is one of the top UK universities for golf, consistently finishing in the top three in the overall BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) golf rankings. The Vic Ambler Golf Centre provides an all-weather practice space on the University’s Streatham Campus and is used extensively by students and the community. The University’s Golf Club attracts around 100 members annually.

Golf at Exeter is also generously supported by our alumni community, predominantly through a series of popular annual Alumni Golf Days.

The University of Exeter students awarded 2017/18 R&A Foundation Scholarships are Claudia Ovens, Alexandra Saunders, Emily Toy, Jack Pope, Bradley Scott, Monty Scowsill, James Blyth, Chris Johnston, and Harrie Llewellyn.
