The Snowdon Trust helps physically and sensory disabled people to access vocational and academic courses in the UK.

New scholarships support students with disabilities

Students with disabilities can now receive support to complete postgraduate study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Exeter thanks to a donation from the Snowdon Trust.

Starting in 2018 the Trust will offer fully funded scholarships to UK students who have a physical or sensory disability which impacts significantly on their lives. The scholarships will support one to two students a year across STEM subjects, fully covering the Masters fees (up to a maximum of £15,000) and providing an allowance of up to £15,000 to cover living costs.

Potential scholars must have been offered a place on a STEM MSc course (including a one year intercalated MSc course as part of a BMBS medical degree) at the University of Exeter and the scholarships will be awarded on academic merit, with the highest calibre candidates being selected.

Renny Leach, Chairman at the Snowdon Trust said: “We are delighted to be able to support Exeter students in this way. The scholarships will allow exceptionally talented disabled people to achieve their true potential. We hope these STEM scholars will go on to become leaders in their fields and be great examples for others to follow.”

Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) said: “At Exeter we are passionate about supporting talented students to succeed, regardless of personal circumstance. These scholarships will ensure some of the brightest and best students have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and we are incredibly grateful to the Snowdon Trust for helping to make this possible.”

The Snowdon Trust is a charity that assists physically and sensory disabled people to access vocational and academic courses in the UK by providing scholarships and awarding grants where other funding is not available. Since being founded by Lord Snowdon in 1981 it has provided grants of more than £3.5 million and helped over 2,500 people.

Making the Exceptional Happen is the University of Exeter’s most ambitious fundraising campaign to date, aiming to raise £60 million and 60,000 volunteering hours by 2020. Donations to the Campaign support all students to achieve their potential at Exeter, as well as helping researchers to make new breakthroughs.
