How do I receive updates about this programme throughout the spring term and beyond?

What is the eligibility criteria for attending the Global Hackathon Week?

You must be:

able to commit to participating in the full Global Hackathon week which will run approximately 9am-5pm (GMT) each day - the exact dates will be provided by the end of March but the Global Hackathon week is likely to take place at the end of May. (See ‘Can I attend from a different time zone’)
A registered student at the University of Exeter or a student nominated via a student exchange partner institution (see FAQs for non-Exeter students)

Can I participate even though I am in a different time zone (i.e. not UK/GMT)?

Due to the intensive nature of this week-long programme which runs from Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm UK time (GMT) it may not be feasible for students from all differing time zones to participate. However, to make the programme as accessible as possible for all, live speaker sessions will be recorded so that you can watch them back in your own time and live chat feeds will remain accessible so that anyone can read back over discussions and updates that were posted whilst they weren't around. For your group work, you will decide amongst your team when the best times for 'live' meetings would be. In these meetings, you can catch up on progress and delegate out future tasks. Where necessary, other work can be carried out independently in your own time. If however you are unable to participate in the Global Hackathon this time, you may instead wish to view 'live' recordings in the lead up to the event which will be published on the Learning Resources page. Alternatively, you may wish to join our ' Building Your Career in Tomorrow’s Workplace' online course with FutureLearn.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes, you will receive an electronic certificate.

How do I sign up to the Global Hackathon?

Is the Global Hackathon week only open to undergraduate level students?

No, all levels of students are welcome to participate. The Global Hackathon is a part of a widerFuture World of Work programme which brings together industrial partners, academics and students to explore and create solutions to the biggest social and technological challenges that organisations face as a result of the changing nature of work in the digital and data-centric era. Undergraduates and postgraduate students are encouraged to work together to contribute to these dynamic discussions.

If I can’t attend the Global Hackathon week, are there other opportunities for me to take part in experiential learning programmes, or in learning more about the Future Work of Work?

If you are interested in attending the Global Hackathon you may also be interested in participating in the University of Exeter Challenges Online programme. Challenges Online is a week-long online programme where you will collaborate with other students to tackle a real world challenge, with support from leading academics and postgraduate facilitators. This programme will run 7-11 June 2021.

A number of places on the 'Challenges Online' week have been allocated to students of Exeter exchange partner institutions. Speak to your Study Abroad Support staff in your institution to see if you are permitted to participate in the programme and ask them to contact our Global Opportunities Team (studyabroadpartnerships@exeter.ac.uk) to request a place on your behalf.

If you would like to learn more about the Future World of Work, you may be interested in attending our‘Building Your Career in Tomorrow’s Workplace online course with FutureLearn. This course takes place over a two-week period, for 4 hours per week and is free of charge (though an optional £32 is chargeable for a certificate of completion). The start of the course and further details are TBC.

FAQs for students from Partner Institutions

I am currently studying at the University of Exeter as an exchange student, am I able to participate in this programme?

Yes, as a current exchange student here for semester two, you are able to participate. For more information and to apply, please see the FAQ section for all students.

I am not currently studying at the University of Exeter, but my university has a student exchange partnership with the University of Exeter, am I able to participate in this programme?

A number of places on the 'Global Hackathon' week have been allocated to students of Exeter exchange partner institutions. Speak to your Study Abroad Support staff in your institution to see if you are permitted to participate in the programme and ask them to contact our Global Opportunities Team (studyabroadpartnerships@exeter.ac.uk) to request a place on your behalf.

I am a student at another UK or overseas university and there is no student exchange partnership. Can I apply independently?

Unfortunately, this is a pilot scheme and as such there are limited places available this year.

I am a member of staff in a partner institution and I would like to find out more about the Global Hackathon programme.

I am an employer / alumni, is there a way that i can be involved?

Employer- and alumni-led engagement runs through our student-facing programmes of activity and we would be delighted to speak to you. Current examples of opportunities include guest speakers and panellists to provide feedback following student Global Hackathon presentations. There are also sponsorship and coporate branding opportunities.
