Introduction to the Global Hackathon

What is it?

The Global Hackathon is the capstone event of the Future of Work spring programme, taking place at the end of the Spring Term and start of the Easter vacation. It is an exciting, dynamic, interactive and large scale event. 

Students will work online in interdisciplinary teams throughout the hackathon week consolidating their thoughts, views, experiences and perspectives on Future of Work themes.

Teams will work together to identify and discuss the challenges faced by individuals, society, disadvantaged groups and employers in relation to the future and world of work and explore what these means for yourselves as students entering a post-pandemic graduate labour market. This will include responding to the question as to whether higher education should have a role in responding to these issues and how universities should prepare their students for the future of work.

At the end of the week teams will present their ideas, conclusions and proposals for addressing these issues. Presentations will be made to other student groups so that you can share and learn from each other’s learning and to hear from expert panellists who will provide feedback to you and your team.

The programme will follow a very similar framework, experience and student-led outputs as the award-winning Exeter Grand Challenges and Challenges Online programme. Follow the links to gain an appreciation of the kinds of activity that you will be engaging in.

When does it take place?

The Global Hackathon week will run in May (exacts dates will be shown here by the end of March). A programme of fun and interactive social and ice-breaking events will take place the week before to allow teams to form, and provide an opportunity for students to get to know each other, understand their interests (in themes and life) and to make new friends!

Who can take part?

Any Exeter student can participate. If places are over-subscribed we may accept students on a first-come-first served basis though we will endeavour to accommodate every student who wishes to participate. We will also ask you to bear in mind whether you have any academic or personal commitments that may restrict you from engaging fully with the programme and with your fellow team members.

A number of places will also be allocated for students from global partner institutions of Exeter.
