Co-creating the top three ways finance can tip the economy to net zero at London Climate Action Week 2020

The finance sector has the means and the scientists have the data, to model interventions with much greater impact than we see today, explain Federated Hermes’ Eoin Murray, and Tim Lenton from the Global Systems Institute. At an event for London Climate Action Week on 18 November 2020, leaders of companies disrupting entire markets were asked how finance could help them accelerate climate action. Their responses were presented as a series of voxpop videos:

A panel comprising Zoe Knight, HSBC Centre of Sustainable Finance, Eoin Murray, Federated Hermes and Astrid Manroth, European Climate Foundation went on to discuss the solutions proposed which culminated in an audience poll to reveal the perceived top transformational objectives for the finance industry.

Other less popular options included funding carbon removals (3%), backing low-carbon solutions (10%), abandoning the fossil fuel industry (6%) and advocating for low carbon policy (5%). Following the event, an opinion piece was published in Business Green and is available to read on the GSI blog. A full recording of the event is available on the GSI youtube playlist along with Tim Lenton's presentation on Tipping positive change and the panel discussion.‌
