Impact and Partnership Development Manager – Environment Team 


Alan's role is to develop links with external partners to our research and vice versa – finding solutions and developing impact for mutual benefit. Working as part of the environmental theme team, Alan's remit includes water systems, marine and landscape conservation, and circular economy.

Alan has worked in the role for more than seven years in a variety of themes linking up researchers from a number of disciplines and working with a wide range of partners.


Alan works at the University on a portfolio basis and continue to co-ordinate the Slapton Line Partnership – a group focussed on the issue of coastal erosion bringing together the community, local government and government agencies.

His previous experience includes:

  • Employment manager/acting project director for the SWOOP (South West Opportunities for Older People) project.
  • Executive Director of the Telework Association - business liaison, government, lobbying, remote management of staff, training development and delivery.
  • IT development and sales - including project management systems, manufacturing and distribution systems, UK and Norway.
  • I originally qualified as a chartered mechanical engineer working for Dowty and Perkins Engines.
  • I have had extensive media contact (including BBC1, BBC2, Radio 4, Radio 5, local radio, and national daily newspapers). I am the author of the Teleworking Handbook published by A & C Black and edited 'Teleworker' magazine for a number of years.

Alan was elected and served as deputy mayor on the local town council where I worked to help establish recycling schemes and encourage greater community involvement.
