Race Staff Support

An inclusive culture and environment

A key theme of Provost Commission activity has been working to celebrate our diversity as well as making the campus environments more inclusive. In addition to the annual programme of activities run by EDI team, Voices work in Penryn and #WeAreAllExeter events by the Guild in Exeter, an annual Exeter Respect on Campus Festival was created in 2018. This was Student Guild led with the organisers of the annual Respect Festival in the city. The aim was for this to become an annual event and in May 2019 a second Exeter Respect on Campus was held.

Senior Role Models

Given the low number of diverse role models at the University a new Individuality Speaker Series was launched in November to bring speakers to the campuses who are champions of equality and are able to bring different perspectives. Two speaker events were held in 2018/19 with Professor Tawara Goode, Director of the National Centre for Cultural Competence at Georgetown University (USA) and Zrinka Bralo, the CEO of Migrants Organise. The series will continue in 2019/20 with a range of speakers being invited.

Dignity and Respect at work

Our network of Dignity and Respect Advisors support the university in being an open and transparent place to work and study, where all staff and students are actively encouraged and enabled to speak out, specifically about any dignity and respect issues. We actively encourage our community to report any level of racial harassment and discrimination that is witnessed or experienced through SpeakOut where you have the option of staying anonymous or speaking to an advisor about your options.

Third-Party Reporting with Devon & Cornwall Police

We are keen on collaborating with the Devon and Cornwall Police Hate Crimes Unit to supporting activity that enables the creation of a holistic picture of incidents within the community. More information to follow.

Diversifying Leadership

The Diversifying Leadership programme is designed to support early-career academics and professional services staff from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who are about to take their first steps into a leadership role. It explores themes of power and influence, demystifying leadership, cultural identity and cultural capital, increasing your visibility and authentic leadership and features leadership stories from high-profile HE leaders.

Get involved with our vibrant and diverse BME community. We want to hear your story, your experiences, and your dreams. We need your input to help us fulfil our ambitions, achieve our objectives and be a true representation of all University of Exeter BME staff and students. Come to our networking events and join the conversation.
