Module description
This module will help you to develop the knowledge of the role and contribution of operations management and the production function in both public and private organisations. It will enable you to understand the processes and systems in services and manufacturing, including operations strategy: design: planning and controlling operational process including quality and total quality management: the use of data and statistics: improvement including, ethic, operations corporate social responsibility and sustainability.
Module aims - intentions of the module
The module aim is to help students to develop the knowledge of the role and contribution of operations management and the production function in both public and private organisations. To broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of processes and operations systems in both services and manufacturing organisations.

- 1. Gain insight into the role of operations management in both services and manufacturing organisations
- 2. Debate how to achieve a balance between differing strategic and ethical demands to achieve well designed long term sustainable operations in the current global environment
- 3. Select the appropriate skills of planning and control resources for the different types of operational environments and culture
- 4. Discuss a the use of analysis and measurement within the operations functions
- 5. Evaluate the management issues concerning quality and improvement methodologies including Total Quality Management and its implications
- 6. Consider the implications for operations management of the wide organisational responsibility to the social, environmental and economic dimensions of the context in which it works.
