Description - summary of the module content

Module description

TESOL (previously known as TEFL) refers to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. In this module you learn about methodology used in communicative language teaching, and develop your classroom presence and classroom management skills through practical input sessions and peer teaching practice. You will examine the grammar, vocabulary and phonology of the English language and learn how to plan well-staged purposeful lessons. The module does not lead to a teaching qualification, but you will have the opportunity to progress to the second and third level TESOL modules ELC2800 and ELC3800.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to develop your language awareness and critical thinking about your own learning, as well as introduce you to basic concepts of language teaching and the skills required to be an effective language teacher. It provides a sound basis for continuation to Level 2 (ELC2800).

Highlighting vocabulary in the classroom: identifying features of lexis, selecting key items, integrating lexis into a lesson and concept checking

Developing classroom presence and classroom management techniques

Establishing aims and intended learning outcomes; structuring a purposeful lesson and writing a detailed lesson plan

Giving instructions and modifying language

Highlighting phonology: transcribing in and out of phonemic script; making word stress

Adapting and supplementing coursebook materials to structure an integrated skills lesson around a reading text
